Artie Shaw's virtuosic clarinet concerto has been described as a "...pastiche thrown together out of some boogie-woogie blues, clarinet-over-tomtom interludes, a commonplace riff build-up towards the end, all encased in opening and closing virtuoso cadenzas for the leader's clarinet"-Gunther Schuller

Watch below for more insights from our conductor Rebecca Nederhiser and Shaw soloist, Eric Wachmann! You won't want to miss this!

George Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue - Leonard Bernstein, New York Philharmonic (1976) 02/08/2024

In anticipation for our upcoming concert, here are some fun facts about Rhapsody in Blue:

*2024 marks the 100th anniversary from when the work was premiered in New York City's Aeolian Hall

*Rhapsody was commissioned by Paul Whiteman and his band for a concert labeled as "An Experiment in Modern Music"

*While written by Gershwin, the piece was orchestrated by Ferde Grofé for Whiteman's 'jazz orchestra'. The version most performed today, wasn't created until 1942.

*During a rehearsal, Whiteman's virtuoso clarinetist played the opening measure with a noticeable glissando as a joke. Gershwin liked the jazzy, humorous touch and insisted that it be performed that way moving forward!

Enjoy a historic performance of the work by Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic. We hope to see you Saturday February 17, 2pm!

We are thrilled to announce our 2024 Wartburg concerto/aria winners: Abby Gaul, saxophone and Georgia La Bounty, soprano.
They both will be featured at our spring April concert.

Read below to learn more! 🎶

Abby Gaul:

"I am a third-year music education major, and I will be performing Fernande Decruck’s Sonata in C #. I am excited to collaborate with the wonderful WCSO musicians again this year! Performing as a soloist with the symphony is a unique opportunity for me to connect with a larger audience and bring Decruck’s music to life. People don’t typically think of the saxophone as a “classical” instrument, and I’m delighted to show that the instrument has a place among the orchestra."

Georgia LaBounty:

"I am a first-year vocal performance major. I will be performing Handel's V'adoro, pupille. I am most excited to work and perform with the symphony on an individual basis. It is an amazing opportunity, especially as a first-year student to get to perform alongside a professional orchestra. I am incredibly excited and grateful to make music with amazing people!"
