St. Paul's Lutheran School

Comments

Today was the First Sunday of Lent, but also marked the first day of Lutheran Schools Week! We had a wonderful morning filled with our students and congregation praising God. Thank you to all the students who assisted us with worship today, and to all the teachers and staff at St. Paul's Lutheran School for all the work and encouragement they provide our students with every day!
In third grade, students study how and why people move from one place to another with the theme “Immigration and Migration.” Mrs. Brown’s 3rd graders utilized google maps, the globe and the map to determine best movement patterns to multiple locations!
A geologist from Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado zoomed with our 6th graders today! Thank you Mrs. Adam’s for arranging this opportunity
Some of my favorite photos I’ve taken in the last couple of weeks! It’s amazing seeing God’s work throughout our school every day. -Principal Johnson

We lost a special alumna this week... Hilda Fedeler, Wartburg's oldest alumna, died June 16 in Shell Rock at age 109.

Hilda was born in 1911 to a farming family in South Dakota, the second oldest of seven children. The family moved to Waverly so the children could attend St. Paul's Lutheran School. To prepare for a teaching career, she enrolled at the Wartburg Academy and Junior College, where she graduated in 1930. After teaching at schools around the Midwest, she returned to the Waverly area to care for her aging parents. Hilda continued her education and received her bachelor’s degree from Wartburg in 1955 and her master’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1956. In 1958, she resumed her teaching career at St. Paul's Lutheran School in Waverly, where she had been a student herself. She later taught in the Cedar Falls School system, retiring in 1976 at the age of 65.

Hilda also taught piano lessons and served as organist in various churches in the area; she still played piano in her senior living facility. Hilda sowed seeds of education, music and faith her whole life, and a Department of Journalism & Communication senior capstone documentary in 2020, "Sowing Seeds: The Hilda Fedeler Story," shows the impact of her long life: https://livestream.com/accounts/1735128/ricedaycapstone/videos/204209281

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church & School in Waverly. Please click here to see the obituary: https://www.kaisercorson.com/obituaries/Hilda-Leona-Fedeler?obId=21485122 #/obituaryInfo

It was a fantastic first (yet short) day of school! The day started with our opening outside with the addition of a ceremonial ribbon cutting for the new renovations. Then we opened the year with parent fellowship before our first day of school worship service led by Pastor Dave Efflandt. At the end of the worship, the parents created a tunnel for the kids to go back to their classrooms. We are grateful for the air conditioning and can't wait for the days to come!

Our St. Paul’s staff have been busy this week creating magical learning spaces for our youngsters. Can’t wait to see them back in the building tomorrow and see their reactions to the modifications of our school building. God bless our workers, our staff, air conditioning, our parents and our students. The 2023-24 school year is going to be amazing at St Pauls! We’ll see you all in the morning!

As a result of the forecast for excessive heat on Wednesday and Thursday, we are going to dismiss school earlier than planned. The new dismissal time will be 11:50.

Even though we have air conditioning now, we still follow the Waverly-Shell Rock School dismissal schedule since we share busing. It’s cool inside!!!

Students will have time to eat their lunch before they leave for the day.

Intake conferences will take place as scheduled.

At this time the Friday schedule remains the same--following our regular Wednesday dismissal schedule at 2pm. We will let you know if that changes.

Due to the early heat dismissal, we will NOT offer after care on Wednesday and Thursday. We will offer after care on Friday starting at the 2pm dismissal time.

If you have any questions, please email or call us.

Due to the extreme heat predicted this week, the Capstone To-Go Meal planned for this Thursday has been cancelled. We hope to see you all at Pizza Ranch on August 28th!

Renovations are on the fast track to completions of this phase of the project. In the past weeks plumbers finished the last valves and connections to the new HVAC units in each classroom. Painters have worked on classrooms, door trim and lockers. Prep work for painting the outside of the windows has begun. A concrete pad has been poured for the new ventilation unit that will be set on the north side of the building. Insulators are completing the wrapping of pipes and ducts. Ceiling contractors are now working to finalize the grid and installation. Cabinets are arriving daily and many have been placed in the classrooms and library. The final window renovation for the ones removed for the HVAC system are now being completed.

Thanks to volunteers this week that hung the white and bulletin boards in the classrooms that have the painting complete. Volunteers have also removed closet doors and hardware in preparation of hanging new closet doors.

We look forward to the final clean up steps and moving back into the building the furniture and classroom items. We will post the dates and times when we know for volunteers to help. We anticipate it to be in the next couple of weeks.

With two weeks to the target end of the project construction is still on track. Only a few items needed have not yet arrived on sight. The plumbers continue hooking up air conditioning units installing control valves. The fire protection contractors have reinstalled nearly half of the devices and will finish late next week. Insulators have finished major ducts and now are on to final hot and domestic water pipe installation. Painters have completed major spraying and most rooms have both the base and accent colors finished. Trim, lockers and exterior painting will be the next steps for the painters. Ceiling grid has been installed in all areas of the school waiting on final install of the HVAC to complete. Lights are being set into the grid and projector mounts are being added to the ceilings. Custodians have started cleaning the furniture for classrooms that have been in storage this summer in room 121. Volunteers have installed a top finish to lockers and have begun cleaning lockers for the painting.

This week marks 2 months since we started construction. Many contractors are working daily to keep the project on schedule. This week some highlights have included the painting of the classrooms on 2nd floor, installation of control valves on 1st floor and setting of new roof top units for air conditioning of smaller areas of the school. Ceiling, electrical, duct and insulation contractors continue to work on many facets of the project. We look forward to soon planning the move back into the school. No dates or times will be set until the building is released for occupancy but we are looking to the 1st and 2nd week of August to make the big move back into the school building.

The work continued during the short holiday work with ceiling grid work being done on both floors. Electrical contractors are installing the new lights in the hallway and connecting the new HVAC units. The last HVAC unit was installed last week. Connections of ducts and final vents are being installed and connected. Plumbers continue their work on the venting devices, control valves, condensation lines and connections. Tapers and mudders are finalizing the new walls with texture and installing the last of the tape of seams above the ceiling level. Pipe insulators are continuing to insulate ducts and will add insulation to hot water lines soon. The cabinet manufacturer sent finals plans and has begun construction on the units.
Volunteers have repaired and installed a bench on the west side of the school building.

Construction Update
Plumbers continue to rough in sewer and water which is nearly 95% complete this week. They are now preparing the HVAC condensation drain connections and prepping the HVAC units to be installed.

Mechanical workers are installing the HVAC units in each classroom. Chases are being covered with drywall having completed inspections.

Volunteers have continued to prep for painting. Painters have arrived and started painting although lots of prep happens prior to the painting.

Ceiling installers have placed new grid in the upper hallway and are now working in the lower hallway. They will move into classrooms next week.

Insulators have completed the domestic water line insulation and continue to work on the duct work.

Drywallers completed the bathroom dry wall and insulation. Mudders have arrived and are expected to complete taping and mudding by the end of the week.

The cabinet maker was on site to verify measurements as construction will start on them next week.

Things are moving well with lots of workers every day and progress continues.

School Construction Update for June 22:
HVAC units for the 2nd floor were raised and inserted through a removed window and are in the rooms ready to be installed. Volunteers prepped the walls for painting by removing old screws and spackling. Thanks to many hands the work was completed in 3 days. Construction workers are busy building chases for the pipes and installing louvers that allow the air to flow to the new HVAC units in each room. Plumbers are running final hot and cold sewer lines for the sinks in the classrooms. Mechanical workers are busy hanging ductwork for HVAC and installing the units in final locations in the classrooms. Insulators are wrapping water pipes and heat ducts with insulation. In addition, volunteers painted the courtyard and rear of Parish Hall and cleaned the air conditioner units for the church. Thank you everyone!
