St. Paul's Lutheran School

Comments

Today was the First Sunday of Lent, but also marked the first day of Lutheran Schools Week! We had a wonderful morning filled with our students and congregation praising God. Thank you to all the students who assisted us with worship today, and to all the teachers and staff at St. Paul's Lutheran School for all the work and encouragement they provide our students with every day!
In third grade, students study how and why people move from one place to another with the theme “Immigration and Migration.” Mrs. Brown’s 3rd graders utilized google maps, the globe and the map to determine best movement patterns to multiple locations!
A geologist from Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado zoomed with our 6th graders today! Thank you Mrs. Adam’s for arranging this opportunity

We lost a special alumna this week... Hilda Fedeler, Wartburg's oldest alumna, died June 16 in Shell Rock at age 109.

Hilda was born in 1911 to a farming family in South Dakota, the second oldest of seven children. The family moved to Waverly so the children could attend St. Paul's Lutheran School. To prepare for a teaching career, she enrolled at the Wartburg Academy and Junior College, where she graduated in 1930. After teaching at schools around the Midwest, she returned to the Waverly area to care for her aging parents. Hilda continued her education and received her bachelor’s degree from Wartburg in 1955 and her master’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1956. In 1958, she resumed her teaching career at St. Paul's Lutheran School in Waverly, where she had been a student herself. She later taught in the Cedar Falls School system, retiring in 1976 at the age of 65.

Hilda also taught piano lessons and served as organist in various churches in the area; she still played piano in her senior living facility. Hilda sowed seeds of education, music and faith her whole life, and a Department of Journalism & Communication senior capstone documentary in 2020, "Sowing Seeds: The Hilda Fedeler Story," shows the impact of her long life: https://livestream.com/accounts/1735128/ricedaycapstone/videos/204209281

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church & School in Waverly. Please click here to see the obituary: https://www.kaisercorson.com/obituaries/Hilda-Leona-Fedeler?obId=21485122#/obituaryInfo

Our preschool classes had a fun week with Miss Angie! Miss Angie is from the Bremer County Conservation program, and she taught our preschoolers all about squirrels. She also brought along some fun activities for the kids, including counting acorns!

Today in School Worship, our 5th and 6th graders shared what they learned and experienced while they were at Ewalu Bible Camp & Retreat Center this past week! They also taught us some songs they picked up during their visit. 🎵

Our connection to Ewalu goes back years. In 1971, the Ewalu program at St. Paul’s began, with overnight stays added in 1996. This program allows the students to learn about the environment and glory of God’s creation in a first-hand way.

Our 5th and 6th graders are off for a week-long adventure at Camp EWALU. All of this couldn't be possible if it weren't for two great teachers and the parent support in transportation, the dads who brave the overnight supervision, and prayers and support from the church and school.

Today in School Worship, we celebrated the Baptismal Remembrances of those baptized in the months of August and September. Thank you to all who joined us! Parents and guardians, as a reminder, you’re always welcome to join us for School Worship on Thursdays at 8:35 a.m.!

Today was our first LIFT assembly of the year! Throughout the 2022-23 academic year, we will be focusing on a different fruit of the spirit each month.

In the month of September, we will be focusing on self control. We also practiced saying a verse from 2 Timothy, which reads, "God did not give us a spirit that makes us afraid. He gave us a spirit of power and love and self-control." (2 Timothy 1:7)

To encourage the students to practice self control, Mrs. Randolph, our media associate, created strawberry-shaped sticky notes that the teachers and staff will give to students who are demonstrating good self control skills. The students can then write their name and grade on the note, and put it on the tree and bush paintings, created by our art teacher, Ms. Saucke, and Ms. Hales, one of our associates, located outside the entrance of the school.

Be on the look out for discussion questions you can use with your students at home to practice what good self control looks like in this week's Curricular & Spiritual Connections post from Principal Johnson!
