Enjoying a concert at Pine K**b, our local outdoor concert venue, with friends. Happily we came prepared for the rain, with umbrellas and a tarp, and we built our own umbrella house and stayed dry for the show.

A peek at our week. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Thank you to everyone who commented with your favorite holiday. Today we made a bar graph of our favorite holidays and what started as a simple math activity turned into so much more!

The children helped collect the data by asking all of you to share your favorite holiday. Then we counted the responses, compared the numbers, and worked together to build our graph. There was plenty of early math happening as we counted, compared quantities, noticed which holidays had more or fewer votes, and talked about what the graph was showing us.

There was also fine motor practice as the children carefully glued each picture into place, along with opportunities for counting, one-to-one correspondence, visual discrimination, and problem solving.

My favorite part was the conversation that happened along the way. We talked about how some people love the same things we do, while other people have completely different favorites. We talked about why someone might choose a particular holiday, the traditions their families have, and the things that make those celebrations meaningful to them.

The children were also learning that their community has a voice. Friends and family took the time to participate in something we were doing here, and the children got to see their responses become part of our classroom experience.

There is something really special about children learning that people can be different from one another and still be connected. We don’t all have to have the same favorite holiday, traditions, or experiences to be interested in one another and appreciate what makes each person unique.

This process allowed us to practice math, fine motor skills, language, social-emotional learning, perspective-taking, community connection, and a little bit of what it means to be curious about other people and the children were completely invested in every bit of it.
