Wow what a fantastic day!! High school choir members Leo Burk, Daniel Glenn and Jamie Guild were selected to represent Denver alongside over 350 other voices from across Iowa at Wartburg College’s Meistersinger Honor Choir with guest clinician Dr. Andre Thomas. A huge thank you to Dr. Lee Nelson, Dr. Nicki Toliver and festival coordinator Sarah Bouska for hosting this incredible event.
Today, hundreds of high school students from across the Midwest will be on campus for the Wartburg College Department of Music Meistersinger Honor Choir Festival and Concert. They will work with Dr. Andre Thomas, a distinguished composer/arranger, as well as Wartburg faculty, staff, and students before tonight's finale concert.

As an added bonus, Dr. Thomas spent Sunday working with Wartburg music ensembles and aspiring composers. #WartburgWorthIt

More exciting music news from our Wartburg College Department of Music. Dr. Karen Black has released a new album celebrating the 25th anniversary of the installation of the college's Dobson Pipe Organ. A CD version of "Ein feste Burg" can be purchased for $15 by emailing [email protected] or at The Wartburg Store. The album will be available for on multiple streaming services in January.
Three of our awesome students represented Denver at Wartburg College Department of Music’s Meistersinger All State Camp this weekend! They joined over 600 other students from across Iowa to learn and start preparing for auditioning for the Iowa All State Choir. Thank you to all the Wartburg faculty and staff for making this camp happen! What a fun weekend of learning and music making! 🎶Valerie (Hulstein) Hennig graduated from Wartburg College in 2001 with a degree in Piano Performance (BM) and minor in religion. Following graduation, she moved to the Twin Cities where she has taught piano lessons for 20+ years. She played organ at Christ the King Lutheran Church in White Bear Lake for 15 years, and is currently subbing as organist at other churches in the community. She currently lives in Vadnais Heights with her husband, Andy and three children. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, cooking, playing harp and taking road trips with the family.

🎶Nicole (Midtgaard) Green is a 2001 graduate with a BA in Music (Piano) and minor in business. During her time at Wartburg, she studied piano and organ, and played saxophone in the Wartburg College Bands. She lives in Cedar Falls, where she maintains a private piano studio and is a church musician at St. John Lutheran Church.

🎶Reverend Amanda Nesvold (’09) is an ELCA pastor currently serving as interim pastor at Gloria Dei and King of Kings Lutheran Churches in Huntington, New York, on Long Island. Since graduating Wartburg and completing her MDiv at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, she has also served congregations in Upstate New York, Wisconsin, and Maryland. She is an avid knitter and woodworker, and enjoys hikes with her adventure dog, Jasper.

🎶Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, Daniel graduated from Wartburg College in 2020 with BAs in Religion and Peace and Justice Studies. He also graduated with a Worship Studies minor. While at Wartburg, he was a 3-year member of the Castle Singers and Neumann Technical Theatre Crew, as well as a 4-year organ student. After graduation, he married his wife Mallory (Wartburg class of 2019) and moved to Texas, and currently lives in Shiner with Mallory, two dogs, and a cat. Daniel is currently completing his Master of Divinity through Wartburg Seminary’s Collaborative learning program and will complete that program in 2024.

The Wartburg College Castle Singers and Kammerstreicher will be performing a concert at St. Paul's on Friday, February 25 at 7:30pm! All are welcome. This will be their send off concert for their tour through Iowa, Nebraska and Colorado! No tickets needed, this concert is open to all. A free will offering will be taken during the concert to help off set the travel costs for students and provide scholarships!

Blessings to the Wartburg Choir as they head to Chicago today and tomorrow for the great honor of performing at the Midwestern Regional American Choral Directors Association Conference in Chicago!
The Performance is on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 11am in the Harris Theater, Chicago, IL
All are welcome. You must check in at the Fairmont Chicago Registration desk; present your ID, vaccination card or proof of exemption, fill out an attestation form, and receive a wristband to attend the performance. Please arrive early to complete this process if you are attending the concert at 11am. Everyone must go through this process in order to receive admittance to the Harris Theater.

🎶Colleen Darland received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Church Music from Wartburg College in 2014. In addition to working for the Diocese of Davenport, Colleen is active as the organist and Music Coordinator for Holy Family Catholic Church, Davenport, IA. She also has filled roles as choir director and organist at several other churches in and around Davenport, including at Sacred Heart Cathedral, where she is often called upon to play for diocesan liturgies, including ordinations. When she’s not playing or teaching music, Colleen enjoys crafting, watching BBC shows, and spending time with her husband and two cats.

🎶Sarah Kolander is a Board-Certified Music Therapist who graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa in 2009 with a double bachelor’s degree in music therapy and music education. Since 2011, Sarah has been sharing her passion for people and music as a Music Therapist at Life in Harmony Music Therapy, LLC (LIH) in West Salem, Wisconsin. She is proud to be a Neurologic Music Therapy Fellow and is the Clinical Supervisor for all clinicians at LIH. Sarah is a Wisconsin native, having grown up on a dairy farm outside of Montello. She also grew up in the Lutheran Church and has been immersed in the Lutheran music tradition for as long as she can remember. She began accompanying church choirs at the piano at the age of 10 and, having had the opportunity to take formal organ lessons as a teenager, became a church organist while in high school. She continued her love for church music by studying the organ as her secondary instrument while at Wartburg. Sarah and her husband, Daniel, have made the Coulee Region of Wisconsin their home. Sarah enjoys directing her church's adult choir, planning and leading Sunday School music endeavors, vegetable gardening, sending cards to loved ones throughout the year, hiking at state parks with her husband, and playing in the backyard with her children, Caleb (6) and Cadence (3).

What a tremendous weekend of music! Saturday, February 5, 2022 will be a concert we will never forget. It was an honor for the Wartburg Choir to be included in concert with the Iowa State Singers, the Des Moines Choral Society and Dr. James Rodde! It was a blessing to share in song with all involved. Thank you to St. Ambrose Cathedral for hosting us all in your beautiful space, to the DMCS for an amazing meal and welcome, and to Mike Elsbernd and St. John's for welcoming us in to prepare for the concert! Every moment of this day is one we will all cherish as we continue to prepare our program, The Path Of Transcendence.
We were able to witness first hand what it is like to transcend as musicians, by being surrounded by the love and the artistry of so many. Thank you again to Dr. James Rodde, the Iowa State Singers and the Des Moines Choral Society for being a reflection of all that helps us rise together. We are forever grateful for our shared time together and we look forward to next time!

Only two audition dates remain to qualify for a Meistersinger Music Scholarship to Wartburg where students from all majors can participate in one or more of the college's 18 music ensembles. Those who qualify can earn up to $7,000 annually (renewable for up to four years) in vocal, keyboard, and instrumental music. Scholarships are open to music and non-music majors.
