“My poems seek to humanize the dehumanized, providing faces for the faceless and voices for the voiceless, through the language of poetry, that is to say the language of the senses."

Hear the works of Martín Espada, winner of the 2021 National Book Award for Poetry, in his own voice at the Michaelson, Briner & Kildahl Literary Symposium tomorrow evening. Espada will read selections of his poems at 6 p.m. Nov. 3 in the McCaskey Lyceum and will sign books after. If you're looking for a course online this summer, I'm teaching the course below, which meets IC-Humanities/Fine Arts and Diversity for your degree.

FL350 Topics in Comparative Culture (IC-Humanities/Fine Arts & DAC) - 6 weeks online
Taught in English, this course will explore the consequences of political, cultural, and socio-economic isolation of Spain and Portugal from the 1930s to their entry into the European Community in 1986 and beyond. Topics to be discussed include the rise and consolidation of the authoritarian regimes of Salazar (1928-1974) and Franco (1936-1975), and the impact of the dictatorships on cultural production. The course will draw on multiple disciplines, including political science, economics, history, journalism, cultural studies, and film, to examine the representation of the Iberian Peninsula’s isolation through 20th-century literary manifestations, especially poetry and the novel. Special emphasis will be given to the Spanish and Portuguese roles in World War II, dictatorial regimes confronting the spread of post-war democracy, opposition and democratization of the 1970s, as well as formal European integration in the mid-1980s.
