Abigail Mokhtary, RN, BSN, PHN is a Home Health and Hospice registered nurse at Catholic Health Initiatives St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN. Abby graduated from Wartburg College (Waverly, IA) in 2018 with degrees in Spanish and Biology. Before committing to more school, she worked as a substitute teacher, a cross country and track coach, a bartender, and a nurses’ aide. She went on to study nursing at The College of St. Scholastica (St. Cloud, MN) and graduated from their accelerated post-baccalaureate BSN program in December 2020. After passing the boards and becoming a licensed Registered Nurse and Public Health Nurse, she began working in her current position, traveling to peoples' homes within her community and providing skilled nurse services. Her experiences in nursing started early on. Working in long-term care and home care as a nurses’ aide is what brought Abby to the nursing profession. Abby currently lives in Flensburg, MN with her pup Gus and fiancé Rob. Their free time is often consumed with spending time with family, fishing, and finding the next big project.

The Nightingale Project is an authentic space for shared experiences in nursing. The podcast features real stories from the nursing community about topics such as loneliness, resilience, and the realities of caregiving during a pandemic.

Online Survey Software | Qualtrics Survey Solutions

If you are a senior and a first-generation college student, please consider participating in this study by a Wartburg alumna.

Dear Participant,

My name is Yvonne Ayesiga and I am conducting research as a part of my doctoral dissertation under the direction of Dr. Eric Anctil in the School of Education at the University of Portland. I am studying Impostor Phenomenon among first-generation college seniors and the factors that contribute to resilience and persistence on the journey to graduation.

Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study is to explore the lived experiences of first-generation college seniors to understand the presence, or lack thereof, of impostor phenomenon during their college journey. In addition, the study seeks to examine how experiences of resilience and persistence among first-generation college students relate to the presence, or lack thereof, of impostor phenomenon. What is Impostor Phenomenon? Impostor phenomenon is described as an individual’s feelings of not being as capable or adequate as others may perceive or evaluate them to be. Symptoms include feelings of phoniness and self-doubt (Clance, 1985). Resilience refers to students who regardless of economic, cultural, family, or other social barriers still succeed at a higher level (Cabrera & Padilla, 2004). Persistence is the percentage of students who are able to return to college at any institution any given term year-to-year (National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, 201).

Participation
If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete an online survey to measure resilience, grit (persistence) and impostor phenomenon.

Participating in this study is completely voluntary and anonymous. The survey should take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. There are no known risks for participating in this study. The results of this study may be used in reports, presentations, and publications but the researcher will not identify you or your institution. There are no known risks associated with this study. You may withdraw your consent at any time and discontinue participation without penalty. You are not waiving any legal rights because of your participation in this research study. Your honest responses on the survey may help us understand more about impostor phenomenon, experiences of resilience and persistence among first-generation college students. This research may help improve future services and supports for first-generation college students on the journey to college success.

Thank you in advance for your consideration. If you have any other questions, please contact me at 319-596-8494 or e-mail me at [email protected]. You may also contact Dr. Eric Anctil at 503-943- 7690 or email at [email protected]. Questions or concerns about your rights as a research participant should be directed to the University of Portland Institutional Review Board, via e-mail at [email protected].

The study has received approval through the UP IRB process. Thank you in advance for your participation in this study. To take the survey, click on the following link: https://uportland.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0cQKpevsnvcQMWF After completing the survey above, you will be entered in a drawing to win one of three $20 Amazon gift cards by providing your name and contact information.

Sincerely,
Yvonne Ayesiga
