Usually at the beginning of April I get to boast a little about our students and the amazing design projects they present at RICE day. This year, RICE day couldn't happen so instead I would like to invite any and all of you to listen in to their final presentations Friday 4/17 from 10:30-12:30 via zoom.
https://wartburg.zoom.us/j/94006418085

ES350 students are juniors who learn about the design process over the course of a semester by designing a device that would improve life and the economy in a developing country.
ES360/460 students are seniors who implement a year long design project with a community partner that (usually) results in a delivered device that addresses an identified need.

04/16/2020

Each winter semester ES 152 students (mostly freshmen Engineering majors) learn to use CREO Parametric - they show off their new skills by recreating an object of their choice using the CAD software. This year's mid semester exodus of campus added a special twist since about half the class lost access to CREO and had to learn a new software in order to complete their projects. Our Engineering class of 2023 were up to the challenge and this afternoon presented their CAD replicas via Zoom. As always, I am amazed that these students knew next to nothing about CAD 15 weeks ago and created these amazingly accurate models.

Also, congratulations to Cael Boehmer whose flashlight model was selected as Most Impressive by his classmates.

Congratulations to Saffa Bockarie a Senior Engineering Major who has made tremendous contributions to Peace and Justice as a student here at Wartburg. You set an excellent example for your peers and those students who follow you. We can’t wait to see the impact you will have in the future!!

Congratulations to Saffa Bockarie, one of the winners of the Dell Award, which recognizes five seniors for noteworthy contributions to peace and justice. Saffa is majoring in engineering science and mathematics.

Saffa's nominator writes: "I have personally benefitted from his wisdom through proposing and implementing the Davis Project for Peace in his home country of Sierra Leone. Another example is working on our engineering project for developing a cassava harvester. Saffa shared an innovative approach to improving agriculture in Sierra Leone to people from a different culture. For these reasons, Saffa deserves multiple awards, and presenting him this one would be a simple way to recognize such a gentle man."

Congratulations, Saffa! 🌍 Read more about his Davis Project for Peace here: https://www.wartburg.edu/2019/04/01/wartburg-students-receive-davis-grants-for-projects-in-namibia-sierra-leone/

Congratulations to Juana Perez, ES'21. Your hard work and commitment to serving others is an inspiration to all of us at Wartburg Engineering.

Next in our series of special student awards: Nobility Award winner Juana Perez Mandujano, a third-year engineering science major. The Nobility Award honors students who have demonstrated outstanding qualities of service, scholarship, leadership and strong moral character.

This fall, Juana studied abroad in Costa Rica and was a volunteer at a public center called CEN-CINAI that serves 200 children from low-income families by preventing malnutrition and providing a safe environment. Due to limited funding, the center often faces adversity.

Her nominator writes: "Juana was just a volunteer at CEN-CINAI, and this project was not a part of the initial plan. She took it upon herself to start a GoFundMe page to provide the children a safe and comfortable environment to help improve the playground and outdoor area. Juana has a CAN DO attitude with everything — in and outside of the classroom. And with the project in Costa Rica, Juana definitely stepped in where she was needed! She exceeded her financial goal and the playground area is beautiful."

Congrats, Juana!

Wartburg students Tyler Bitting and Saffa Bockarie talk about their Davis Projects for Peace experience. Their project, which earned a $10,000 grant, helped improve access to clean water for drinking and irrigation in the Mobai village in Sierra Leone. Last night, Saffa Bockarie Jr. (BS’20) and Tyler Bitting (BS’20) described their Davis Project for Peace at a dinner celebrating the work of Shelby Davis - the co-founder of the Davis UWC Scholar program. The Davis program has supported many Wartburg Engineers over the years, including Saffa. Last year, Saffa and Tyler journeyed to Africa to implement a cleaner water project supported by a Davis Project Grant.

Saffa and Tyler did and have done Wartburg Engineering proud. Good job!

Senior Seminar met for one last discussion at Dr. Black’s house tonight. After a hard fought double elimination bracket, the class discussed the hardest question from a pool of ethics puzzles.

The cake was cut in a pattern reminiscent of a box truss. This caused some unease.

On Tuesday the ES 151 students (1Ys + Travis) tested the children's games that they redesigned for kids with disabilities. This year we had: UNO for limited sight and limited hand motion, Yahtzee for limited sight and limited hand motion, dominos for limited hand motion and mastermind for limited sight. All of the groups did a great job and a number of creative solutions were explored. We then all had fun playing each others games to learning about things that worked and didn't so as to design the best final product. #WartburgWorthIt

Congratulations to Senior Engineer Saffa Bockarie. He was awarded the St. Elizabeth Award for Service on Wed. Saffa was recognized for his dedication to service as evidenced by his work as an RA, as an igKnight Mentor, and in his two Davis Projects for Peace in which is worked on water projects at two different sites in his home country of Sierra Leone. Saffa is an excellent example of the difference that Wartburg Engineers make in the world. Just think what he will do after he graduates!!
