EquiHeart The Equine Encounter for Personal Growth and Relationship Development. Horses teaching Humans Come accept an invitation from a horse!

EquiHeart is a program managed through the psychotherapy practice of Connett & Associates, through which people learn to improve their relationships and gain insight into their personal challenges by interacting with horses. The Equine Encounter - a "Guided Horsemanship Experience" - is a personal growth and recreational activity offered through EquiHeart where participants enter into "The World of the Horse." Through observation of and interaction with horses, participants have the opportunity to develop their own unique partnerships with horses. By stepping outside our familiar world and entering into the dynamic world of the horse, we encounter highly intuitive, sensitive, alert animals that can teach us the importance of intentional, focused, direct and honest communication, thus helping us improve relationships in our world. The Equine Encounter is an experience for individuals, couples, families and groups that is enlightening and fun, and a positive, effective way to recognize one's strengths. Learning life lessons in communication, assertiveness, confidence-building and problem-solving through interacting with horses is an experience you will never forget! Your life will be changed for the better!

Sand Wash Basin, CO is where I’ve traveled 4 times to photograph Wild Mustangs. I fell in love with the first band stallion I ever photographed. His name is Rocket. He and several of his band members were taken away from their wild life by a brutal helicopter round up through the BLM in 2021. Rocket is now living on my farm and helping people as a therapy horse because I adopted him, determined that he would never end up in the slaughter pipeline.

Now, the BLM is scheduled to go back to the Sand Wash Basin next week and remove 200 more mustangs in another helicopter roundup. The governor of CO is trying to stop this. Other organizations are going to document and keep advocating for the end to these removals. They are trying to conserve the lives of wild mustangs on the ranges that are supposed to be their safe haven.

My White Horse, My Gentle Spirit

My white horse,
come closer to me.

Let me rest my hand
upon your quiet neck
and feel the warmth of the life
that the Great Earth has placed within you.

You do not need words.
I have learned to hear you
in the silence.

I hear you in the soft breath
you give to the morning,
in the rhythm of your heart,
in the gentle sound of your hooves
upon the ancient ground.

My beautiful one,
you have carried me
through fields of golden grass,
beneath endless skies,
through rain, through dust,
through nights when the moon
was the only light we had.

And still,
you never asked me
where we were going.

You simply walked beside me.

So today,
I ask nothing of you.

Do not run.

Stay here with me
beneath this quiet sky.

Let the wind move through your mane.
Let the sunlight rest upon your back.
Let the birds sing above us
and the earth hold our footsteps.

I will tell you a secret,
my gentle horse

sometimes I am afraid too.

Sometimes my heart grows tired
from carrying dreams
that seem too far away.

But when I look into your eyes,
I remember.

The path does not need
to be known all at once.

We only need
to take the next step.

So if tomorrow brings thunder,
we will face it together.

If the road becomes difficult,
I will place my hand upon you
and remember your strength.

And if the day is beautiful,
we will ride beneath the open sky
until the sun disappears
behind the distant hills.

My white horse,
you are not only the one
who carries me.

You remind me
how to keep moving
without losing gentleness.

How to be strong
without becoming hard.

How to trust the path
even when I cannot see
where it ends.

Tonight,
when the stars awaken,
I will whisper a prayer
for you.

May the rivers always give you water.
May the grass rise softly beneath your feet.
May the wind carry you toward peaceful places.
May the spirits of the ancestors
watch over your journey.

And wherever your path may lead,
remember this

there will always be a place
in my heart
where your white spirit
runs free.

Last summer, we visited the Salt River, AZ Wild Mustang Herd Management Area. It was so enchantingly beautiful. We spent a few days starting at dawn to witness their routine as they came down to the river each morning to graze on the eel grass in the river. Enjoy our magical encounter!

I haven’t posted in a while. But we’ve continued to have Equine Encounters early in the day to stay out of the blazing heat lately. Here’s some pics to recap the adventures!

This is a profound reframing of the experience of a horse walking away from a human - not resistance or defiance. An invitation into an honest relationship. I love this!

A horse who walks away from you is not always rejecting you.

Sometimes they are checking whether you will follow the old pattern:
pressure,
insistence,
capture.

Many horses have learned that humans often respond to distance by closing it.
By advancing.
Correcting.
Convincing.
Escalating.

So when a horse leaves, it is not always defiance.

Sometimes it is a question.

“What will you do with my honesty?”

Will you allow the conversation to stay honest?
Or will the moment their answer becomes inconvenient, the pressure begin?

I think this is where so many relationships quietly change.

Because there is a moment horses seem to recognize something rare:
the moment they realize they are still safe even after expressing discomfort, uncertainty, or preference.

The moment they realize:
“Oh…
you heard me.”

Not just physically.
Emotionally.

You heard the hesitation in their body.
The uncertainty in their eyes.
The tension in their nervous system.
The quiet request underneath the movement away.

And instead of overpowering the communication, you listened.

I think humans often underestimate how profound that can feel to another being.

Especially to one who has spent much of their life learning that resistance leads to more pressure.

That is why some of the deepest trust I have ever witnessed did not begin with a horse moving toward someone.

It began with a horse discovering they were allowed to move away without punishment.

Because sometimes what looks like “disconnection” is actually the first fragile attempt at honesty.

And sometimes the greatest transformation is not teaching the horse to stay.

Sometimes it is teaching them they no longer need to flee to feel heard.

Not obedience.
Not submission.

Relief.
