120 years ago today John Koch, former mayor of Milwaukee, purchased 8 acres with a house on the corner of North & Wauwatosa Avenues from the children of Reverend Enoch Underwood. That same day he sold the land to the Altenheim Society for $1. The remodeled house served as the first Altenheim (known today as the Lutheran Home) until 1925. The initial capacity was 15. Today the Lutheran Home serves over 200+ people/day and Harwood Place serves another 200+ residents. The generosity of a few individuals was able to create an organization that has served tens of thousands for 120 years.
