More than 1,400 miles round trip, but it was a great adventure! I spent Saturday at the Fort Buford Historic Site just outside Williston ND. Big thanks to everyone who came out! I had an awesome time bringing the Ice Age to North Dakota! Here is a quick look at the entire display. 🦣

This weekend is going to be a big one! I am expanding my mammoth hunting territory in a westward direction. From 10:00 to 4:00 this Saturday I will be participating in a huge historical event at the Missouri - Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center, Fort Buford State Historic Site in Williston, ND! If any of you are in the area be sure to come by. I will be one of a large number of educators, historians, and reenactors for the event.

Since it is going to be an outdoor event, I am even going to have my buckskin hunting shelter set up. As usual I will be introducing folks to the world of our Ice Age ancestors with atlatls, megafauna, fire, and so much more. 🦣

A big thanks to both the Beaver Dam Community Library, and the Dodge County Historical Society for having me at the library this weekend! We had a great crowd, got to see some awesome mammoth bones, and even got a few spear throws at the end of the program. 🦣

Today is a repair, and rebuild day. If the weather allows I will be making more pine pitch over the next few days since I am almost out now. I plan on three batches in different colors! Video will be incoming...

After a super busy summer with hundreds of spear throws my atlatl darts were in need of some work. The scarf joint I use to attach antler points is very strong, but even that wears out after a good season.

Once the point breaks loose all that need to be done is to pull it apart, clean off the old resin, glue it back together with fresh glue, wrap fresh binding, and secure with a layer of pitch. 🦣

A couple of points to note:

-I use a heavy coating of pine pitch because of the abuse these darts take. If I was using these for hunting I would want a much smoother transition from tip to dart shaft for good pe*******on.

-I use plant fiber binding rather than sinew for ease of replacement over time. While both would have been options for Paleolithic hunters, the sinew is stronger and smoother when properly applied.

-Antler "field tips" are not for big game. They work well for small game, birds, and fish, but they do not pe*****te well on thick hide. For that I would need to add stone bladelets.

Yesterday afternoon, between thunderstorms, I took my foraging bag out and gathered a literal bucket full of wild plums! I got some video in the process, so there will be a new YouTube short up in 6 to 10 to 97 hours depending on Cave-baby's pushing buttons... 😅

Seriously though, this is what I am talking about in programs when I say there are better food sources in the Summer than a mammoth. In 45 minutes I was able to gather a huge amount of calories without a single spear throw, or getting stepped on by a 10 ton fur ball with attitude about being on the menu.

Take advantage of the late Summer bounty, and gather while the gathering is good! There are adventures in learning waiting for you right in your backyard! 🦣🍎🍑

What does a mammoth hunter jam to after the hunt? Rock, of course!

While this video is just a bit of fun with "B" roll from the collaboration announcement I put together, it also illustrates something very important in what I bring with The Mammoth Hunter programs. The mammoth hunt is only a small part of Paleolithic life. Our ancestors spent far more time making clothing, tools, shelters, art, telling stories, and of course making music, than they ever did hunting mammoths.

The mammoth hunt is the center piece of the program, but the rest of the display is what life was really up to all those thousands of years ago. Prehistoric people were just like us. They just did some things a little differently...

We are proud to announce the new, collaborative "Ice Age and Oceans" program! A full day pop-up museum with The Mammoth Hunter and Forest Whales!

We set up in your gym and transform it into a natural history museum for the day. On one side, The Mammoth Hunter brings the Ice Age to life through prehistoric tools, museum-quality replicas, and live demonstrations covering Ice Age megafauna and early human history, with a hands-on look at the massive display. On the other side, Forest Whales brings Clara, a 56-foot inflatable gray whale, alongside marine science programming, whale bones, and fossils spanning ocean science and paleontology. The tour of Clara takes you inside the massive marine mammal where students can learn about the inner workings of whales from inside a whale!

Every student goes through both experiences. No buses, no permission slips, no field trip logistics. We bring it all to you!
