Happy Juneteenth from NHD! Juneteenth celebrates the day in 1865 that enslaved Black people in Galveston, TX, finally learned of their freedom. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 declared that enslaved people in Confederate territory were free, many enslaved people were purposely uninformed of the Proclamation.
