It's never too early to think about providing your child with an excellent, Lutheran, classical education. If you have or know a 4-year-old who is looking for a Christian elementary school, please talk with our Headmaster and schedule a tour.

It’s been a busy first few days but we are happy to see our students enjoy St. David’s Academy.

Why do we promote teacher-led instruction?
Imagine sending a child to learn piano and having an instructor tell the student to "figure it out on their own", or imagine enrolling your student in a sport and having the coach give them a ball and tell them to "try your best."

In the realms of art, sports, and dance, it is expected that people master the basics of the activity in order to express greater proficiency. Great coaches and instructors are praised for their students' mastery of the "fundamentals," and the excellence of their output attests to this early investment.

If we don't expect students to master music, dance, or sports without an instructor focusing on the fundamentals, why do we often expect students to teach themselves math, reading, and writing? But this is the case with the prevalence of "student-centered learning" common in many schools. Teachers do not teach fundamentals to build habits; students 'discover' what they need on their own.

At St. David's Academy, we believe that this approach is backwards. Just like in sports, dance, and music, achieving excellence starts with the fundamentals. Excellent teachers can teach these fundamentals in a comprehensive, structured way, saving time and ensuring mastery. Does that mean that students never guide their own learning? By no means, but students guide their learning after mastering the fundamentals and within the scope of their current level.

Teacher-led instruction should not be controversial. If you want to learn more about St. David's classical curriculum, visit: https://www.stdavidzion.org/academics/curriculum
