DEATHS

Mary Ellen ‘Mel’ Aspenson (nee Fauerbach)

May 7, 1953 — May 28, 2024

Mary Ellen “Mel” Aspenson (nee Fauerbach), age 71, was born to eternal life on Tuesday, May 28, 2024.

Mary Ellen was born in Madison, WI on May 7, 1953, the daughter of Richard and Mary (Gorman) Fauerbach. She was a graduate of Catholic Memorial High School’s Class of ’71 and received a bachelor’s degree in Art Studies from Edgewood College in 1975. Afterwards, she began her lifelong career working in print design and creation in various forms.

She was the proud mother of her son, Peter, and her life was filled with his many school and athletic activities. Most memorable though were their trips to the family cottage in Minocqua, Disney World, Washington, D.C., Cooperstown, and the world renowned Black Duck, MN. She was able to fulfill her lifelong dream of visiting Ireland this past October, touring the sites and scenes from Dublin to Cork, the Cliffs of Moher then Glasgow and back.

Mary Ellen was honored to be a member of the Waukesha Service Club, Beacon Lights and a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary’s. She was a warm, friendly, CLASSY LADY who had a style all her own ... highlighted by bright lipstick, flashy clothes and funky hats. Her creative eye was integral to her success at Milwaukee Magazine, Quad Creative, Project Lead The Way, and as the bulletin editor of the Catholic Community of Waukesha.

For those who knew Mary Ellen, witnessed a true one of a kind. Her innate ability to make others feel special is something rarely seen these days. Mel knew that the little things mattered and that truly listening to someone goes a very long way. She believed that every person was important and deserved to have someone put in the extra effort to make sure they felt it.

Mary Ellen will be dearly missed by her son Peter, sister Kathleen (La Verne “Doc”) Best, Orangeville, IL, and brother-in-law Bob Smart of Waukesha, WI. She was the proud aunt of Kaitlyn J. Best (Alex Rosa) Chicago, Illinois, Michael Smart (Karla), Big Sky, MT, Jeffrey Smart, Waukesha, WI, and Eric (Hayley) Best, Roosevelt, MN. Great-Aunt of Gracie Best, Tanner Smart and Landon Smart. Mary Ellen was predeceased by her parents, her younger sister, Ann Smart, Angel Siblings and Peter’s father, Tom Aspenson.

Services will be held on Friday, June 7, 2024, with visitation from 10 a.m. until a noon funeral Mass at St. Mary Catholic Church, 225 S. Hartwell Ave., Waukesha, WI 53186. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to Catholic Memorial High School, 601 E. College Ave., Waukesha, WI 53186, or Angels-Grace Hospice, N74-W35908 Servants Way, Oconomowoc, WI 53066.

The 50th CMH class reunion committee is in the process of contacting our classmates with information about our 50th class reunion. You will be receiving the following documents:

Hello fellow Catholic Memorial High School classmate. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 50 years since we graduated from CMH next May 2021. To celebrate this occasion the CMH 50th reunion planning committee has put together an event on Saturday July 17, 2021. See the enclosed flyer detailing the event.

Covid-19 has put a damper on a lot of planned activities this year but we are hopeful that by next July this pandemic will be under control so we can come and have a great time.

Waukesha South is also having their 50th class reunion that same weekend. Our class has been invited to the South’s Friday Picnic at Naga-Waukee Park. More details will follow about this picnic.

The CMH class of 1970 has rescheduled their 50th reunion party from this past summer to next July 17. They will be next door to our event at Thunder Bay.

We are looking to see how many are interested in attending the reunion event so we can determine the per person cost. Right now we are looking at $50-$55 per person. We had 72 people attend the 45th reunion event, we are hopeful to have that many and a fee more attend the 50th reunion.

We are working with CMH to establish a link on the schools website to register and pay online to attend the 50th Reunion. More details will follow when this is up and running.

If you are interested in attending the 50th reunion please complete the form at the bottom of the flyer and return it to the reunion planning committee person who has sent you this letter.

You can also check the “CMH 1971” page for any additional information that will be posted as we receive it.

We are starting to make plans for our 50th CMH class of 1971 reunion for next summer. Hopefully we will be past the worst of the Corvid 19 pandemic. The group organizing Waukesha South class of 71' 50th reunion has asked if we wanted to have one joint reunion party on July 17 2021 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Brookfield. I just wanted to get some feedback on what others thought of this idea that South had presented to us to join together as one group to celebrate our 50th class reunions. Please feel free to respond with your comments.
