LMSCA provides many opportunities for all students to excel in and outside of the classroom. On April 19, 1999, Lions Mathematics and Science Christian Academy opened its doors for the first time, with the enrollment of four students in its Pre-K program: two full time students and two part time students. It was the first Academy of its kind on the North Shore --- a Christian pre-school and elemen
tary program, with a focus on math, science and technology delivered through a curriculum based on brain learning theory. It also was a dream come true and a vision realized by Dr. Jean and Sherman Swopes…. a dream to provide a school where young children could grow to their full potential in Christ. In the summer of 1999, the first Robot camp was offered- a summer enrichment camp that focused on the science of robotics, math and computer skills development. Through this camp, students were recruited and the first primary program of the Academy was launched – grades 1st through 3rd. Forty six students enrolled in the academy that Fall and soon there was a waiting list to get into the preschool and kindergarten programs. and Dr. Swopes named the school out of a great love and respect for nature, especially animals. Little did they know, but the Lord had already made provisions for the name and the symbol of the Academy. They felt that the Academy’s name should symbolize its mission to develop young Christian leaders in the areas of math and science…and so the name Lions Mathematics and Science Christian Academy was chosen. The school symbol, a male Lion and three cubs represents the divine love our Heavenly Father has for us. The Lion is often referred to as the King of the jungle: always a prudent and guarded steward of its environment; a leader in his habitat. Although they had chosen a name and a symbol for earthly reasons and in earthly terms, the picture of a male Lion nurturing its cubs is not natural. However in Spiritual terms, it is the very nature of Jesus, our Lion of Judah, to be seen nurturing and caring for his children. For it was He who said, “Behold the children to come unto me, for such is the Kingdom of Heaven”. This for them was another revelation and testimony of the awesome work and power of the Lord. The Lord continued to reveal Himself through the foundational scripture of the school, given not once but twice. 2 Peter 1:5-7 and 2Peter 1:10 state “Add to your faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness and love. If you do these things, you will never fail.” That is the desire- to provide children with a holistic education that guarantees success. Out of these verses come the values on which this Academy stands: Faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. It was He who gave the vision and it was He who made the provisions from the name to the location. We thank God for His vision, His provision, and this most awesome mission.
