In this video, I perform Moszkowski’s beautiful Romance in F Major, Op. 42 No. 1 on my Kawai K-200 upright piano. Follow along with the scrolling sheet music to enjoy every nuance of this lyrical miniature.

This piece is a gem of late-Romantic salon music—full of flowing melodies, tender harmonies, and an elegant, intimate atmosphere.

Though not as famous today as some of his contemporaries, Moritz Moszkowski was a celebrated pianist, composer, and teacher in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in what is now Poland, he studied and built his career in Germany and France.

Moszkowski was renowned for his brilliant piano technique and sparkling compositions—he was praised by the likes of Franz Liszt and Ignacy Paderewski, who called him “a master of melody" and compared him to Chopin.

He wrote virtuosic études, dazzling concert works, and many charming smaller pieces like this Romance, which demonstrate his gift for lyrical, memorable tunes and colorful harmonies.

As a teacher, Moszkowski taught notable students including José Vianna da Motta and Wanda Landowska, helping shape the next generation of pianists. Unfortunately, despite his success, he died in relative poverty after losing most of his wealth during World War I.

Today, pianists rediscover his music for its sheer beauty and craftsmanship—reminding us why he was once one of Europe’s most admired musicians.
