This week, we’re celebrating Mirna Orozco! 💛

Mirna joined Reading Power as a preschool tutor at Robbie M. Lightfoot Early Learning Center in Waukegan through our partnership with College of Lake County's Early Childhood Education program—and we are so lucky she did! Even after her class at CLC ended, Mirna chose to continue tutoring, now supporting two classrooms each week!

Her flexibility, generosity, and commitment to our students truly stand out. Mirna shared, “I love being here and with the students, and I feel good helping them learn to love reading.” 📖✨

🐣For her Page Turner pick, Mirna selected Cric-crac, ¿quién hay? by Tristan Mory—a fun and interactive board book that invites readers to guess who’s hiding inside the egg with each “crick-crack!”

Thank you, Mirna, for your incredible dedication and for bringing so much joy to our classrooms—we’re so grateful for you! 💫

Robbie M. Lightfoot Early Learning Center will be closed to students on Thursday, December 4, following today’s plumbing issue. Our maintenance and operations teams have identified and addressed the problem and will use tomorrow to complete repairs, test all systems, and finish cleaning student areas.

Staff will report to the building as normal.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Friday.https://wps60.org/news/what_s_new/lightfoot_closure_update_-_no_attendance_on_dec__4

The PM session of our Robbie Lightfoot preschool program is canceled today, December 3, due to an emergency water main break affecting part of the building.

Our buses have already begun afternoon pickups. If your child has already been picked up, they will remain at Lightfoot in a safe, dry space until an approved parent or guardian arrives.

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding. Additional updates will be shared as soon as they become available.

We're excited to welcome our youngest learners back for the 2025-2026 school year starting Tuesday, August 12! Please note that preschool students follow a slightly different schedule than our K-12 students.

EPIC students will not attend school on August 11. Preschoolers will follow their normal schedules on district-wide early release or late start days. Additionally, EPIC will have monthly asynchronous learning days where students learn from home — with two scheduled in March 2026.

A full preschool calendar is available in English and Spanish to help families stay informed. You can access it, and more information here: https://www.wps60.org/news/what_s_new/important_pre_k_schedule_modifications

Our Distrcit's Black Parent Network (BPN) will be meeting virtually next month. This is an opportunity to connect, collaborate, and share insights with other parents dedicated to supporting and empowering our children and community.

The meeting will be held virtually through Zoom on Monday, February 10, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

During this virtual meeting, families will have the opportunity to discuss important topics affecting Waukegan’s students and families, exchange ideas, and explore ways to build a stronger, more inclusive community.

Today, it was officially announced that the President is ordering a pause on all federal grants. We understand that this may cause immediate concern about the funding of crucial programs within our District, but we want to assure you that we anticipate being able to withstand this temporary pause without any interruption of services.

Here’s what we want you to know:
