Robin's World of Monarch's

Robin's World of Monarch's A page created to encourage others to join in the fight to save the monarch butterfly.

This is where I will share my ideas and post photos & videos of my experience. I'm not an expert, just one individual with a passion to help save the dying monarch.

Someone that stopped at my estate sale said she wanted plants for caterpillars. I offered to give her milkweed seeds. So I prepared them for her.

When I'm done with toilet paper or paper towels, I save the empty roll and cut it to smaller size rolls. Then I make 4 slits on one end of the roll so I can fold up to make a bottom. Add some dirt and place your cold stratified seeds in the dirt. Water. Once the seeds sprout, the little pods can be put in the ground or planter. No transplanting needed.

All milkweed seeds need cold stratification. One way to do that is to place your seeds on a slightly damp paper towel, cover with paper towel then place that in a sealed bag. The bag will then go in your refrigerator or freezer for 30 days. Don't forget to mark your bag with type of seed and date.

This year wasn't a great Monarch rearing year. Most of my milkweed didn't come back from prior years and what I started growing this year didn't get watered enough.

To date, I released 29 butterflies: 18 males, 11 females. I have 1 chrysalis left and 1 πŸ› that should J in the next few days.

I was lucky enough to find 3 small πŸ›πŸ›πŸ› in the middle of Aug. I couldn't have timed it better. Two πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹ eclosed just before my daughter's wedding. One of the πŸ¦‹ didn't fly away right away so the photographer took advantage.

Here are a couple preview photos but one I'm looking forward to is the πŸ¦‹ on a 🌸 along with the wedding πŸ’ πŸ’

The first butterfly of the year was released yesterday and today I found an itty-bitty πŸ›. I brought 'em in and gave a fresh leaf. The itty-bitty πŸ› showed their appreciation 🧑

The larva hangs in a 'J' position, time varies, before the next stage of metamorphosis. Just before the change happens, the front filaments crinkle.
