The School Board of Hardee County mourns the passing of Mr. H. Jerold Knight, whose life reflected an extraordinary commitment to service, education, and the people of Hardee County.

Jerold served our community in countless ways—as a teacher at Hardee High School, a member of the Hardee County School Board, president of the Hardee County Education Foundation, mayor of Bowling Green, a proud veteran of the United States Army, and a strong and devoted advocate for Hardee County students. In 2022, he was inducted into the Hardee County Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding service to the school system and the Hardee County community.

His leadership, creativity, humor, and generous spirit brought people together and made our community stronger.

In his Hardee Senior High School senior yearbook, Jerold listed his ambition as:

“To leave some simple mark behind to keep my having lived in mind.”

Jerold accomplished far more than leaving a simple mark. His legacy lives on through the students he supported, the opportunities he helped create, the organizations he strengthened, and the many lives he touched through his friendship and service.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Jerold’s family, friends, and all who loved him. Hardee County has lost a faithful servant, a treasured friend, and one of its greatest champions. His remarkable legacy will not be forgotten.

🎉 **Congratulations to one of Hardee County’s own!** 🎉

We are incredibly proud to congratulate **Lindsey Smith**, a former Hardee County teacher, on being named a **finalist for Polk County Teacher of the Year!** Lindsey currently teaches Language Arts at Kathleen High School, where she continues to make a difference in the lives of students each day.

Making the celebration even more special, Lindsey was joined by her mother, **Melanie Smith, a Hardee County teacher**, her father Bobby Smith, Lindsey’s son, and **Hardee County Superintendent Sonja Bennett**. The moment was especially meaningful for Superintendent Bennett, who served as Lindsey’s principal for ten years when Lindsey taught at Wauchula Elementary School.

It is always exciting to see a member of our Hardee County family continue to grow, lead, and positively impact students wherever their journey takes them.

A new school year means new teachers to meet, new lessons to learn and new opportunities ahead. Across Hardee County, our educators and other school-based employees are preparing to welcome students back and help every child begin the year feeling supported and ready to learn.

As our community starts this new chapter together, we’ll also be sharing factual information about the proposed Hardee County Education Referendum and what it may mean for local schools.

This afternoon, a school bus transporting five secondary students home was involved in a single-vehicle incident. Shortly after the incident, the bus caught fire. The driver followed established safety protocols, quickly evacuating all five students and moving them to a safe location away from the bus. We are grateful to report that no students or staff members were injured.

The Hardee County Sheriff’s Office and Hardee County Fire Rescue responded promptly and remained on the scene managing the incident. District transportation staff notified the students’ parents, and another bus was dispatched to safely transport the students home.

The safety of our students remains our highest priority. We are grateful for the calm, quick actions of our bus driver and transportation team and for the prompt assistance of our local first responders.

🇺🇸 **Proud of Our Hardee Senior High School Air Force JROTC Cadets!** 🇺🇸

We were honored to have members of the **Hardee Senior High School Air Force JROTC Color Guard** present the colors at tonight’s School Board meeting.

Thank you to cadets **Romeo Ruiz, Alex Saldana, Luke Vue, and Breanna Bishop** for representing HHS and our district with pride and professionalism.

Our Air Force JROTC program provides students with opportunities that extend well beyond the classroom. Cadets can participate in activities such as **rocketry, drill and ceremonies, archery, air rifle marksmanship, robotics, JROTC Academic Bowl, astronomy, and cadet staff and planning**—all while developing leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and self-discipline.

We are proud of these cadets and grateful to our JROTC instructors for providing experiences that help prepare students to lead, serve, and succeed. Thank you for starting tonight’s meeting in such a meaningful way! 🇺🇸
