Sequoia Personalized Learning Community is a combination of Independent Study (IS) work, small classes, and tutoring. Students meet weekly with their teacher to receive personalized work to meet both their skill and credit needs. This time will be spread out over 2-3 days. For students who are working or have other commitments, there is some flexibility to the schedule. Students may also drop-in a
ny time they need a quiet place to work. Classes & Study Hall will have around 12 students. Advisory blocks will have about 5 students. Students’ schedules will be made up of the following components:
Seminar – This is a group class where students will work on the skills needed to conduct a research project. Algebra Class – Students who need Algebra credits will be enrolled in the Algebra class to receive direct instruction and learn together as a group. Algebra is the class that is the most challenging for students to complete in IS. Study Hall – This is a time when students will be able to work on their independent work and receive help from the teacher. Additionally, the teacher will often pull 2-3 students who are taking the same course to do activities or discussions. Advisory – This is the time when the teacher will be meeting with each student individually for 30 minutes. Students will have time to work on their individual work during the other 2 hours of advisory. Morning Break – Students will have a morning break from 10:15-10:30 where they will be encouraged to get outside and move around a bit. ONLY the PLC students will have break at this time. Lunch – Students will have a lunch break from 12:30-1:00 (during afternoon advisory). This lunch will overlap with regular high school lunch break. Students who do not wish to be out with all of the other high school students should tell the teacher when setting up their schedule. Sample student schedules:
Student A attends Monday, Wednesday, & Thursday from 9am-12pm for a total of 9 hours. Student B attends Tuesday from 9am-3pm and Friday from 9am-12pm for a total of 9 hours.
