Are you interested in becoming a Jr. Livestock Sponsor?

As in years past, there are a couple of options to donating to the Santa Cruz County Fair Jr. Livestock Department.

AUCTION SPONSOR: Support the Jr. Livestock Auction by placing an ad in the Auction Buyers’ Guide. The Jr. Livestock Auction has an average of 170 animals sold each year. Monies donated to the Auction are used for advertising, promotions and the Livestock Buyers’ Fund.

AWARDS: The 4-H, FFA, Grange and independent exhibitors bring their livestock to the Santa Cruz County Fair to compete in breeding, market and showmanship classes. Awards are presented to the exhibitors demonstrating the best in animal husbandry and showmanship.

We appreciate your ongoing support of our youth who have invested countless hours in preparation for the fair. All donors will be acknowledged in our Auction Buyers’ Guide.

The 2022 Jr. Livestock Auction will be Saturday September 17. We hope to see you there.

Hello Livestock and Poultry Exhibitors!

The Santa Cruz County Fair is just six weeks away. We are happy to announce that the Livestock and Poultry Departments are open for business and that we will have our usual shows and auction this year. The livestock area will look a little different, though, as we move toward modernizing our facilities. Pens for hogs, sheep, market goats and dairy goats will be set up in new locations this year. We’ll know more about this as we get closer to the fair and will keep you posted.

Here is some important information for a successful fair:

1 – Poultry entry deadline is this Saturday, August 6, at 11:59 p.m. The glitch in the set up of the meat pen division has been
corrected.

2 – All other livestock entries are due by Thursday, August 25, at 11:59 p.m.

3 – If you are entering a natural fed or bred & fed market animal, you have to submit two entries for the single market animal. If the animal is a natural fed AND bred & fed animal, you will need to submit three entries for the single market animal:

Enter your market animal in the appropriate FFA or 4-H Market division/class PLUS submit an entry for the Natural Fed and/or Bred & Fed division/class for the same animal.

4 – If you are entering showmanship, you must also enter the animal that you will use for the showmanship division. Please review the entry guide for showmanship requirements.

5 – Exhibitor wristbands ARE REQUIRED for exhibitors of large animals (cattle, hogs, sheep, goats*). Look for Department Livestock – Credential and Extras in the online system and submit an entry for the appropriate division/class. *Pygmy goats excluded.

6 – HOG EXHIBITORS – must bring their own waterers this year due to the relocation of the hogs. If you do not have a waterer, there are DIY videos and instructions on the internet. Think PVC pipe and a Lixit hog ni**le. All hog pens are 4x6.

7 – Should the number of entries we receive exceed our pen capacity, our Livestock Pen Space Policy on page 4 of the Livestock Entry Guide will be used to cancel classes beginning with the lowest priority. If you enter and pay entry fees for animals for which we have no room, your entry fees will be refunded.

8 – If you have entries in a Saved Cart, don’t forget to go back and submit them by the deadline.

Hello Santa Cruz County Fair Livestock Exhibitors, Parents and Leaders!

With 2020 in the rearview mirror and some positive COVID-19 trends in our area, the Santa Cruz County Fair Livestock Department is optimistic that we will have some kind of modified “fair” this year. Recent successes with the Holiday Lights and Fair Food Drive-Thru events lead us to believe a drive-thru fair could be a fun way to celebrate our community at fair time. We’ll share additional information about the fair in future communiques.

The Livestock Department learned a great deal about virtual and live shows as well as auctions last year. Our auction, while small, was a huge success. Our virtual shows went well, but lacked the fun and excitement that come with seeing the exhibitors with their animals in the arena, vying for the top places in their divisions. We hope to offer a more typical livestock show and auction this year, but acknowledge that the pandemic responses by health officials play a major role in determining what we can do. If live shows are offered, they may be one-day shows where exhibitors bring in their animals on show day and take them home after the show. Market animals would then be delivered to the load-out point at a later date.

Decisions on which classes will be offered has not been made. Showmanship classes may or may not be offered – a decision will be made as we get closer to fair time. If we are forced to limit the number of animals we can accommodate, our priority will be market animals first, breeding/dairy animals second, carcass animals third. Please consider the uncertainties of this evolving situation prior to purchasing animals you plan to raise for the fair and consider the risk involved.

We would like to know if you plan to participate in this year’s livestock show and which species you are planning to show. This year, exhibitors will be allowed to bring only one non-beef market animal and/or one beef market animal. Extended areas (Santa Clara & San Mateo Counties) will be limited to 5 market beef (these animals have been already identified) and 10 market hogs, 10 market lambs and 10 market goats combined.

This weekend we wrapped up our first ever virtual livestock auction! THANK YOU TO EVERYONE who came along with us as we navigated this uncharted territory - the Exhibitors, the Volunteers and the Buyers! Together we were able to support 55 Exhibitors with over $142,000 in sales and add-ons!

EXHIBITORS: be sure to submit your Thank You letters by 10/5/20 (see your email for details).
