There’s still room in Fiction Writing 12A/Fiction Workshop 14A! The class meets Mondays live via zoom from 6:30-9:35PM starting August 24th. Join a fun, upbeat, creative community as we learn to write realistic dialog, form satisfying plots, paint compelling characters, and avoid the pitfalls of cliche. Develop writing routines and habits of mind that allow your creativity to flourish. We’ll read inspiring short stories by writers like Louise Erdrich, N.K. Jemisin, Carmen Maria Machado, Jhumpa Lahiri, and excerpts from novels like A Tale for the Time Being and The Sympathizer. This semester there will be a special highlight on the publication process.
About the professor: Kathleen Founds holds a bachelor’s degree from Stanford and an MFA from Syracuse. She is the author of the award-winning story collection When Mystical Creatures Attack! (A New York Times Notable Book) and the graphic novel, Bipolar Bear & the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Health Insurance: a Fable for Grownups. Her work has been published in The Sun, Good Housekeeping, McSweeney’s, The Rumpus, Salon, and The New Yorker online. Her novel, The Ghost Mom’s Guide to the Afterlife, is forthcoming from Knopf in 2027. She is a very appreciated teacher at the Watsonville Center.
