There's a moment most parents don't talk about.
Your kid comes home quiet. You ask what's wrong. They say "nothing." And something in your gut tells you it's not nothing.
You want to push. Maybe you do push. But was that the right call? Did you just push them further away?
I spent many years in the law enforcement profession. Several years as a detective, a detective supervisor, and worked cases that included crimes against children. Those cases are the ones that most people don't want to think about.
I've sat across from too many families after something went wrong. I know what they wished they'd said or done.
And then it got closer. And I realized that all the training in the world doesn't prepare you for the moment it's not a case file anymore. It's friends. Family. Acquaintances.
But most of what's in Keep Them Close I learned after I left the profession. And still learning every day. As a father. Studying. Getting it wrong. Figuring out what actually works.
I built Keep Them Close because I couldn't stop thinking about those families and because of what we see on the news almost every day.
I think parenting is the hardest but greatest responsibility on the planet. So what can we do better, in the everyday small encounters to mitigate the possibility of pushing them away as they get older.
This is not just about predators. It's about every hard conversation parents avoid, or have once, think they checked the box, and never revisit. It's about keeping the door open so your kid always feels safe to come to you. I can't tell you how many times I heard, "why didn't you tell me?"
Topics like mental health. Alcohol. Drugs. Explicit content. Grief. Intimacy. Bullying. The stuff that feels too big or too awkward to bring up.
