Dear Watonga Public Library
I hope you can help me. I am looking for a Jan King, who lived in a house at Sunset Dr., Watonga, OK73772 (I have her complete address). I have a letter she wrote to Mrs. Harriet Wood of World Vision on 6-1-1982. She wrote about her trip to Korea in 1969 to meet her orphan girl she was sponsoring. She enclosed a photo of the girl and Mr. Youn-seong Kim, her interpreter about whom she was inquiring in the letter. In the letter she wrote: "P.S. If possible, please return the photo, as that trip was a very precious time in my life." However, for some reason, the photo was not returned to her, and it is currently in my possession. Would you please advise how I can find out if she or her descendants are still living in Watonga? If I can contact her or her family, I would very much like to speak with them and return the photo to the family. Thank you in advance!
Come join us!

I'm looking forward to sharing the story of Pax TODAY at the Library... and revealing more of the back story of the journey... the incredibly varied ways to research, using resources at our local library and in museums, archives, genealogy sites, public records, etc. that can cross over to other searches. I was researching my boat Spidsgatter PAX but you could use these tips for family history, antiques, old houses, etc. I'm also up for questions. Bring 'em!

The talk today is at 1:00. I'll have copies of the new book and if we have time, may even read a few paragraphs from the next book...When a Cowgirl Goes to Sea.
Mother Goose, our grass is growing!!!
Here's a review of a movie now available at the Watonga Public Library:
The Spitfire Grill "1996 Sundance Film Festival audience award winner embraces viewers with its tender spirit, moving performances, and sensitive script and direction. All of these elements combine with the glowing New England landscape to make a movie of genuine and generous feeling." To a town with no future comes a girl with a past and everyone's life changes. The movie features an ensemble cast of Ellen Burstyn, Marcia Gay Harden, and Will Patton. The story is heartbreaking and heartwarming. Rated PG-13, it is a story that could change your life. /Linda Barrett

City Hall Moving

The City of Watonga is proud to announce that we will be moving City Hall to 410 West Main Street. Previously, the DHS Building. We plan to move the week of September 13th thru the 17th.

The Light and Water Office will also be moving at the same time and Watonga Chamber of Commerce is already in the facility.

Unfortunately, there may be short periods of time when offices are not accessible. We will try to keep these inconveniences to a minimum. The phone number 623-7354 will be a backup number if you need to reach someone while we are in transit. You can also email to [email protected] for assistance. The night deposit box at the old City Hall at 115 N. Weigle, will continue to be in service for at least through the week of moving.

The tentative schedule is to have our first City Council Meeting at the new facility October 19, 2021.

Thank-you for your patience. We have tried to anticipate all contingencies but, none of the current staff has any experience moving a City Hall.

Watch for our Open House.

Library History

The Watonga Public Library has a long and rich history. The library was started in 1906 through the efforts of Mrs. T. B. Ferguson, wife of Oklahoma’s 6th Territorial Governor and a small group of concerned women including Mrs. A. W. Sunderland, Mrs. E. E. McCord, Mrs. Isabelle Piper and others and contained about 1,100 books.

By 1929, Watonga became a city and by 1930 the library had grown enough to move to the basement of City Hall. In a newspaper article dated 1931, the library reported total books in the library as 2,059.

The legal description for the Watonga Library is Block 18, City of Watonga. The patent for Block 18 was issued to Amos A. Ewing, Presiding Judge. He then issued a Trustee Deed to the Trustees of Watonga. On April 3, 1956, the City of Watonga traded Blocks 107 to 110 for Block 18 to be used as a park and the Library.

The Library started in the County Court House and later it was moved to the north part of the City Hall, which is now the City Clerk’s office.
