The BASC Welding Program hosted its very first welding competition on May 12, bringing together some of the region's most talented young welders for a day of competition, learning, and friendly rivalry.
The "Bragging Rights" Competition was originally created by welding instructor Andy Vigil of Williston High School and has quickly become a great opportunity for students to test their skills under pressure. This year's event featured 15 student competitors representing Williston High School, Watford City High School, and Alexander Public School.
Competitors faced a series of challenging welding tests that mirrored real-world industry expectations. Students completed two horizontal 6010 1/8" open-root welds, one downhill 6010 1/8" open-root weld, and finished by fabricating a 5" x 5" square cube using 7018 3/32" electrodes.
Two local welding professionals volunteered as judges, carefully evaluating each weld and providing valuable feedback to the students. First- and second-place prizes were donated by local supporters, while lunch and competition materials were generously sponsored by community partners.
While the competition may have looked like a fun day in the welding shop, its true purpose goes much deeper. These events help students experience the pressure, focus, and expectations that come with real welding tests and employment opportunities. Learning to perform when the stakes are high is a skill that can only be developed through experience.
Last semester, BASC students received their first invitation to compete in Williston, where they earned the Bragging Rights Trophy and brought it home to Watford City. This spring, our students successfully defended their title, ending the school year with the trophy remaining at BASC.
We are incredibly proud of all the students who stepped up to compete, challenge themselves, and represent their schools. The future of welding in western North Dakota is bright!
