A little optimism goes a long way.

Bill Burke, founder of The Optimism Institute and Thomas College’s 2026 Commencement speaker, is on a mission to push back against growing pessimism by encouraging small, intentional shifts in how we see the world.

His advice is simple:
Step away from constant news and social media, keep perspective by remembering history, and take time to notice the good happening around you every day.

Try it for yourself. Look up, unplug, and catch people being good. You might be surprised by what you see.

We’re proud to join in celebrating Conrad Ayotte ’77, H’98 on this well-deserved honor! His decades of leadership, generosity, and commitment to Thomas College and it's community truly embody the spirit of what it means to be a Terrier. We’re excited to recognize and celebrate the lasting impact he’s made over the years.

We are proud to celebrate Conrad Ayotte '77, H'98 as a 2026 honorary degree recipient.

A Thomas College graduate and dedicated leader, Conrad has spent decades giving back to his community and helping shape the future of the College through his longtime service of nearly four decades on the Board of Trustees, including 34 years as chair.

Raised in Sidney, Maine by a single mother who emphasized education and perseverance, Conrad graduated at the top of his class from Thomas and became its first graduate to pass the CPA exam on his first attempt. After earning an MBA from Notre Dame and beginning his career with Price Waterhouse, he returned to Maine, where he built a distinguished career as an entrepreneur and financial leader, including ownership roles in Benton Plastics and J.S. McCarthy Printers. Beyond business, Ayotte has played key roles in strengthening numerous community organizations and institutions.

His impact is lasting, and we are honored to recognize him with his second Doctorate of Humane Letters at this year’s Commencement.
