It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Charles A. Dana Professor of Economics Emeritus Clifford Reid passed away this weekend.
Professor Reid retired from Colby in 2009 after 22 years of legendary teaching in our department. Cliff began his teaching career at Grinnell College and arrived at Colby in 1987 with his wife, Sheila McCarthy who established the Russian Studies program here.
To many of his colleagues, Cliff was the epitome of a liberal arts college professor. Cliff received his bachelor's degree from George Washington University and his Ph.D. from Princeton University. He co-authored several publications with current members of our department and was a distinguished scholar on topics of discrimination in American life, specifically in housing, employment, and wages.
Here at Colby, Prof. Reid taught micro principles and micro theory, econometrics, and public finance. The Colby Magazine noted on announcing his retirement that he was known for his "...rigorous standards in the classroom" - surely an understatement by any stretch of the imagination.
All of us who taught with Cliff have stories to share about the meaningful impact he had on our careers. He will be missed.
