Mary was born on November 18, 1936. She was raised in Waterville, Maine and lived at 10 King Court in the Head of Falls section of the city. She was the 13th child of James and Carrie George and had six sisters and seven brothers. Her parents emigrated from Lebanon in the early 1900s. Joseph’s Mar
onite School and graduated with honors from Waterville High School in 1955. After High School, Mary was employed as a Secretary at the Hathaway Shirt Company in Waterville. There she met her husband, Jim O’Connor of New York City. They were married in 1960 in Germany and subsequently settled in Farmingdale, New York where they raised five children. Mary found her life’s joy in raising her children, and building a warm and loving home. She loved deeply and taught her children all that was important to live a happy life. Her home was a place where all were always welcome and often visited by family and friends. Annual family vacations were spent in Waterville to spend as much time as possible with her siblings and many nieces and nephews. Many members of the family still reside and thrive in the Waterville area - five generations after James and Carrie George emigrated from Lebanon. Her full and busy life did not leave much time for hobbies, however, she enjoyed swimming, cooking, decorating and entertaining family and friends. Mary did not have much use for material things, however, she did become a passionate collector of MJ Hummel figurines; a large collection is still displayed in the homes of her children. Mary was devoted to her Catholic faith throughout her life. She could always be found volunteering on countless committees and taking on leadership roles at the school and throughout her Parish community. Mary is deeply loved by all who knew her. She was a devoted Wife, Mother, Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Neighbor and Friend. She was always the first in line to help - no matter the need. A generous soul always sharing what she had with others. Mary was a truly beautiful woman - not only by what is seen by the eyes, but what was felt in the heart. Mary was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and after enduring 6 months of grueling treatment, she lost her courageous battle on April 3, 1976. She was 39 years old. The Mary L. George Foundation was created by her children, to remember, celebrate and honor her life. To continue in the spirit of her generosity, the Foundation offers scholarship opportunities to graduates of Waterville High School, providing often much needed financial support for those who otherwise may not be able to continue with their education.
