4th Grade made clay triangular coil pots, shaping and rolling the clay using our hands and scoring and slipping 4-6 coils on top of the base and also making a slab lid using relief techniques. After they were fired, we glazed them using different colors to emphasize our design and they were fired again.
5th grade artists created independent ceramic projects, coming up with a few different ideas and designs before choosing one that would utilize pinch pot, coil pot, flat relief or slab building methods, which they have experienced through previous projects at Hosmer. Students created their work using clay, then it was fired in the kiln and they glazed them before they were fired again. This year’s projects featured many creative containers, and a few pieces inspired by SpongeBob!

1st Grade made clay pinch pot monsters, starting with the pinch pot method they learned last year. They added smaller details, such as eyes, teeth and horns, by scoring and attaching them with slip, a mixture of clay and water.
2nd grade artists made animal relief sculptures out of clay in art class recently. Students created details, scored them and used slip to attach them to their animal’s face.
3rd Grade made clay coil pots, shaping and rolling the clay using our hands and scoring and slipping coils on top of the base. They added details such as handles, letters and shapes.
After all the pieces were bisque fired, we glazed them and they were fired again.

This spring in art class, 3rd grade artists looked at and discussed the flower paintings of American artist Georgia O’Keeffe. Using reference images of real flowers, students drew their chosen flower from observation and did their best to match the colors and details using oil pastel.

PAPIER MÂCHÉ ICE CREAM CONE SCULPTURES
4th grade artists created
papier mâché ice cream cones, beginning with an armature underneath made with a cup and newspaper. We added layers of papier mâché, using newspaper and white and brown paper, to form the cone and scoops. We painted them to represent different flavors and added details like sprinkles and other toppings. They were on display recently for the spring concert.
