Congratulations to Anne Carson, awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature โ€œfor her bold and inventive oeuvre, which in playful dialogue with the classical tradition has created new forms for contemporary literature.โ€

Carson was a 2018 Inga Maren Otto Fellow at Watermill. That same year, she took part in ๐˜ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต, House of Treesโ€™ (House of Trees) project pairing female-identifying artists and writers with seamstresses from San Antonioโ€™s Center for Refugee Services to make political and poetic felt banners. Carson created three banners with artist Amy Rose Khoshbin (Rose Khoshbin), sewn by Iraqi seamstress Kifah Mohammed. Among them, ๐˜ ๐˜ž๐˜ข๐˜ด ๐˜‰๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ง๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ ๐˜“๐˜ฐ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ ๐˜•๐˜ฐ๐˜ต ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ borrows a line from ๐˜ˆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฌ, her version of Sophocles, and ๐˜ˆ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ง๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜‰๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜•๐˜ฐ๐˜ต ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ž๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ draws on the history of protest movements. Curated by Noah Khoshbin (no_self_promo), the exhibition also included Carsonโ€™s reading and performance of ๐˜ˆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฌ, presented in collaboration with Stony Brook University. The banners have since been shown in Times Square, at the Guggenheim, and in Texas and Washington, D.C.

Happy birthday, Bob ๐Ÿ–ค

Hereโ€™s Robert Wilson at the Grail Retreat in Loveland, Ohio, celebrating his birthday in 1968 with a cake made in the shape of ๐˜—๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด, the outdoor sculpture he spent that summer building.

The Grail, a Catholic laywomenโ€™s organization, commissioned ๐˜—๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด that year. Wilson and a small group of collaborators set 676 telephone poles in 26 rows of 26. Each row is uniform in height, and the rows climb in six-inch steps from two feet to eighteen. The result is a field you can walk into, part landscape and part stage, and it introduces ideas about scale, time, and space that run through everything Bob made afterward.

Nearly sixty years later, ๐˜—๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด is still standing in Loveland.

โ€œLittle meddler,โ€ who screamed that?
It was me.

In todayโ€™s world we are domesticated, not tamed, but to survive we have to hold on to what keeps us feral, cling to it until it severs our limbs. In this performative sound installation, metal becomes more metallic. It becomes a caricature of itself. The history of any object is a mystery. Our only way of understanding the elements from the periodic table are through modern associations of the object. In ๐‘ต๐’๐’• ๐’”๐’ ๐’‰๐’†๐’‚๐’—๐’š ๐’Ž๐’†๐’•๐’‚๐’, history is amplified, and resolved.

Track the surveillance, then.
We are trapped in its reflection.
Not so heavy anymore.

The performer is celebrating while stuck in aerated concrete atop a mound of earth by giving material form to invisible emotional weight, moving between burial and release. ๐‘ฐ ๐‘ฉ๐‘ผ๐‘น๐‘ฐ๐‘ฌ๐‘ซ ๐‘ป๐‘ฏ๐‘ฌ ๐‘ซ๐‘น๐‘ฌ๐‘จ๐‘ด ๐‘ถ๐‘ญ ๐‘ผ๐‘บ ๐‘บ๐‘ถ ๐‘ฐ ๐‘ช๐‘จ๐‘ต ๐‘ญ๐‘ฐ๐‘ต๐‘จ๐‘ณ๐‘ณ๐’€โ€ฆ considers what we carry, what holds us back and what must remain in order to keep moving forward. Between play and endurance, burial and emergence, the body reveals what grief hardens into and what remains with us long after we decide to let go.

For our 2026 Summer Festival, ๐‘ณ๐‘ฐ๐‘ด๐‘ฐ๐‘ป๐‘ณ๐‘ฌ๐‘บ๐‘บ ๐‘ป๐‘ฐ๐‘ด๐‘ฌ, International Summer Program artist Maximiliano Siรฑani (Maximiliano Siรฑani) presented ยซ๐‘ฝ๐’‚๐’„๐’–๐’–๐’Ž ๐’„๐’๐’†๐’‚๐’๐’†๐’“ยป.

ยซ๐‘ฝ๐’‚๐’„๐’–๐’–๐’Ž ๐’„๐’๐’†๐’‚๐’๐’†๐’“ยป is a two-minute performance in which a vacuum cleaner, instead of sucking in, is blown from the mouth through the pipe to release red, purple, and white confetti. Reversing the applianceโ€™s intended function, the act of cleaning becomes an attempt to release inner pain. Portable and approximately 99% ecological, the paper, and eventually its colors, will disappear with time.

Weโ€™re pleased to participate in the Soft Network Benefit Auction, open exclusively on Artsy through October 7, 2026! The auction brings together works by an exceptional group of artists in support of Soft Network and the organizations participating in the sale.

In the final days of his life, Paul Thek asked that his executor, the artist Robert Wilson, one day authorize editions from the copper etching plates Thek had made in 1975 but never printed. In 1992, four years after Thekโ€™s death, the Estate of Paul Thek and Brooke Alexander Editions, New York, published Untitled, 1975/1992, from those original plates. The etchings were printed by Branstead Studio, New York, on Twinrocker paper, and each impression is numbered in pencil and bears the Estateโ€™s stamp.

Soft Network is a nonprofit that helps artists, estates, and archives care for artistic legacies, especially those of experimental, time-based, and ephemeral practices that are most at risk of being lost. Supporting our work keeps vital but under-resourced artists visible and ensures that the people who steward their legacies have the resources they need.

For our 2026 Summer Festival, ๐‘ณ๐‘ฐ๐‘ด๐‘ฐ๐‘ป๐‘ณ๐‘ฌ๐‘บ๐‘บ ๐‘ป๐‘ฐ๐‘ด๐‘ฌ, soprano and songmaker Tara Khozein (Tara Khozein) presented โˆž ๐’”๐’๐’๐’ˆ๐’”, a cycle of eight original works for solo voice responding to texts by Laurie Anderson, Luciano Berio, Forugh Farrokhzad, Christopher Knowles, Ezra Pound, Lou Reed, Shane Weeks, and Robert Wilson. Throughout the Festival she gathered intimate audiences for ephemeral performances that wrapped around the listener โ€” a musical time capsule, conceived to hold this singular moment at The Watermill Center.

In attempting to achieve a native English pronunciation, Leo De Paula (Leo de Paula) presented ๐’€๐’๐’–๐’“ ๐‘ฌ๐’๐’ˆ๐’๐’Š๐’”๐’‰ ๐’Š๐’” ๐’—๐’†๐’“๐’š ๐’ˆ๐’๐’๐’…, a piece that reflected on accent as a marker of belonging, as part of our 2026 Summer Festival. Through video, sound, performance, and the moving body, phonetics were investigated as part of processes of access, perception, and social hierarchy. It traced the invisible infrastructures of immigration, code-switching, and the enduring promise and illusion of the North American Dream.
