OTD students recently had the opportunity to learn from Tom Hoey, COTA, who brought a variety of equipment commonly found in skilled nursing and long-term care settings. Students explored wheelchair seating and positioning solutions, experienced the differences between various cushions, and practiced applying adaptive equipment to different wheelchair models.

Tom shared not only his extensive knowledge of seating and positioning but also the creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on skills often needed to make modifications that can significantly improve a person's comfort, safety, and quality of life. Students even had the chance to make manual wheelchair adjustments themselves, bringing classroom concepts to life.

Another venture off campus!

Allen College Occupational Therapy students recently visited Clark & Associates, where they explored orthotics and prosthetics. Thank you to Andy and Scott for their informative presentations, facility tour, and the opportunity to observe fabrication processes in action.

We are grateful for this ongoing partnership and excited to continue building opportunities for students to engage in hands-on experiences, and collaborative learning as they continue throughout the program.

Thank you to Talk to Me Technologies, Hillary Harting and Sara Blake for coming to Allen College for a hands-on AAC learning experience! Students explored communication devices, learned about AAC technologies, and gained valuable insights into supporting individuals and working with AAC vendors and speech language pathologists. Learning directly from the experts helps prepare our future occupational therapists to facilitate participation, independence, and meaningful engagement.

Occupational therapy students recently participated in an Assistive Technology Lab featuring adaptive bocce ball. Through hands-on experiences with adapted equipment and strategies, students explore ways to support participation for individuals who are blind or have low vision.

This learning opportunity shows the importance of accessibility, inclusion, and ensuring that everyone can engage in meaningful leisure activities. As future occupational therapists, our students are learning how adaptations can help remove barriers and promote participation for all.
