Waterloo West High School Band

"Excellence is the consistent pursuit of perfection." The Waterloo West High School Band Program has a long tradition of excellence in music.

The Wahawk Band prides itself on a well-balanced program with a focus on music education, performance and a commitment to teaching students how to succeed in life through hard work and a passion for learning. Ensemble offerings include the Wahawk Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Symphony, Pep Band and Jazz Band. Students also perform in a Solo & Ensemble Festival and have the opportunity to par

ticipate in Symphony Orchestra, Show Choir Band and Musical Pit Orchestra. Membership is open to all high school students who currently play a band instrument. The course is designed to give every student an equal opportunity to participate in the various aspects of the band program and enhance his/her musical growth through individual study and performance as it applies to his/her particular instrument. In addition, the student will be given the opportunity to appreciate music both as listener and performer. Students participating in the ‘Wahawk’ Bands are able to participate in any other activity West High offers. Accommodations are made by the directors to allow students to be actively involved in a variety of activities.

Due to the weather, we will not be marching in the Memorial Day Parade today.

It continues to be an interesting year for weather! Due to the chilly conditions tonight, we are moving the Pops Concert into the auditorium. Students need to be at school by 6:30, and the concert will start at 7:00. Concert dress has been told to each group, so students should know what to wear.

Congratulations to Emma Riordan on winning the grand prize in our practice pass raffle! She got a personalized cookie cake, and the band directors joined her and her friends for lunch.

Congratulations to Makayla Rasmussen on being a state finalist for the Major Landers Scholarship. This award is given out every year by the Iowa Bandmasters Association to a high school student planning on majoring in music education at an Iowa college or university. She will receive a $1,000 scholarship!

We hope you can join us for the annual Band Banquet tonight beginning at 6:00 in the Commons. It is always fun to recap the year, acknowledge our seniors, give out awards and reveal the marching band show for next year. Hope to see you!

Students attending should plan on bringing the dish corresponding with their last name/class.

It was great to host the choirs and Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra from UNI to perform excerpts from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony today. What an amazing performance and experience!
