Ballentine Farm is a family-owned and operated, self-sustaining farm and educational facility located in beautiful Waterford, VA. Our kindergarten through eighth grade programs introduce learning in a unique farm environment. We facilitate hands-on guided discovery among living laboratories of gardens, fields, orchards, barns, ponds and educational center. Many STEAM, project based learning, colla

borative learning, and humanities programs provide opportunities for our children to apply their knowledge and problem-solving skills to creative learning experiences. Our holistic curriculum, based on Virginia State Standards, consist of reading, writing, math, science, social studies, art, music, mindfulness, Spanish and physical education. Assessment of each child's learning modality allows instruction to be directed to specific learning styles. Through small class sizes (6:1 student-teacher ratio) and a staff passionate about teaching, we assure the classroom is a place where all students can develop their ability to think critically and creatively to build a strong academic foundation.

So does Ballentine Farm Education Center! Open House: April 22

Across Austria, schools are integrating hands-on gardening into education, teaching children how to grow their own food from an early age. Instead of learning only from textbooks, students work directly in school gardens where they plant seeds, water crops, and watch them grow over time. This practical experience helps them understand where food comes from and the effort involved in producing it.

Through these activities, children learn important skills such as patience, responsibility, and environmental awareness. They discover how soil, water, sunlight, and seasons all play a role in growing healthy plants. Many schools also connect these lessons to broader topics like nutrition and sustainability, helping students see the relationship between what they grow and what they eat.

Beyond education, these gardens create a deeper connection with nature. Children develop respect for the environment and gain a sense of pride in harvesting food they have grown themselves.
