If I could go back to my 20-year-old self—who was hot-headed and likely would have turned her back on me—I would tell her what she would eventually accomplish.

I became a mother at 16, and by 24, I was raising four children. I was divorced by around 27, living back at home with my dad, returning to school, and working. Though I was overwhelmed, I remained determined to build a better life for my children.

Fast forward to today: I have three more daughters, have been married for over 25 years, and am a grandmother to 12. I am now opening my second child care center, having started the first at 51. Whoever said it’s never too late was right.

Born and raised in Southwest Detroit, I dropped out of school at 15. Starting a retirement fund at 55 (oops!), I am now doing what I love while embracing all of life’s ups and downs.

I wouldn’t have it any other way, because wishing even one thing were different would change it all.
