Now for a little history lesson. What building in Waterbury is noted as the premier Art Deco building in the area, built in 1930 with the hopes of revitalizing the downtown in the midst of the Depression? It’s The Brown Building, or course! Located at the center of town, known as Exchange Place, which has been the economic hub through the years. Directly across from it, is Waterbury’s Green, a park once called Central Square and built in the 1800s. The Brown Building has gone through many changes. It’s been a department store, housed doctors and dental offices, retail stores, barber shops, and even a pizza joint. Today it’s the home of some quite amazing students, if we might say. For several years before 2016, our building lain dormant until Green Hub Development purchased it with the intent of making it what it is today. This change has spurred a transformation within the city and is a key component of the new revitalization of downtown Waterbury.

We want to say thank you to .sanford for the amazing painting. Brock Sanford was a student at the Waterbury Arts Magnet School for seven years. WAMS is located right across the street from the Waterbury UConn Campus. Brock is now a senior at UConn’s School of Fine Arts. Brock worked over 2 months to construct and execute this creative piece. Brock explains that the color palette resonates as a symbol of diversity. Context is key, Brock says. He explains that his piece serves as a symbol of diversity. Diversity is a value we hold in common with his masterpiece here at the Brown Building and on campus. @ The Brown Building Living
