19 years ago today a boy from Laramie, WY was robbed from this world too early due to his sexual orientation. From October 26th-29th NVCC Theatre plans to honor Matthew Shepard's life by putting on the show "The Laramie Project" where the Tectonic Theatre company went to Laramie and interview people over a 6 month period and created a story about how an awful event changed Laramie and LGBT history. Rest in peace Matthew Shepard.

With graduation today we have a lot of talent leaving on to fulfill a better life and make the world a better place. There is no one person that we can thank more than Burton Tedesco our director, our mentor and our inspiration. He and his wife Marjorie have been affectionally called "mom and dad" by the department because not only did he teach us but he made us know that we always had a home. He has created countless memories and have changed the lives of many of us. He didn't just teach us, he guided us to a better future. He is going to be moving on from NVCC and to a new university after 4 great years which have produced a valedictorian in his brief time here. I know wherever he goes he will continue to inspire people. I could write an essay on all the things he has done to change my life and I speak for everyone of his students and graduates that we love you and will miss you.

"The soul needs to eat too" -Burton Tedesco

"There is a tide in the affairs of men./Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;/Omitted, all the voyage of their life/Is bound in shallows and in miseries./On such a full sea are we now afloat,/And we must take the current when it serves,/Or lose our ventures." Shakespeare's Julius Caesar Act 4 Scene 3

Today, perhaps more than any other day, this quote from Shakespeare rings true. It is Graduation Day and we are all venturing into new waters. Though we must all be courageous going forward and embrace change, we cannot forget that we are family… and always will be…

Congratulations graduates. You inspire us all.

Exeunt omnes...
