Waterbury native Mercedes Martinez, who established herself over a 25-year career as one of professional wrestling's greatest champions, has been inducted into the Women's Wrestling Hall of Fame. Martinez, born Jazmín Benítez, graduated from John F. Kennedy High School, Waterbury, CT and studied criminal justice at Post University before becoming a pro wrestler. The Hall of Fame noted that Martinez is "always a professional in and outside the ring," and wrestling promoter Sheldon Goldberg has said, "Sometimes in wrestling you can tell a person's special when they walk through the curtain for the first time. It was instant electricity the moment she came out." Congratulations Mercedes on making Waterbury proud!
