You digest more than food.
One of the things I’ve learned from paying attention to my own body is that complicated doesn’t always mean better.
Over time I started simplifying the way I eat. I often break my overnight fast with fresh whole fruit. I give myself time before eating again. When I eat a concentrated protein, I tend to pair it with vegetables. When I choose a concentrated starch, I tend to build the meal around that and vegetables instead. When I eat beans, I keep that meal simple too.
This is how I eat because I pay attention to how I feel.
I’m not telling you there is one perfect way every human body should eat. There isn’t.
What I want you to take from this is the practice of noticing.
For years, so many of us have been taught to follow plans without learning our own bodies. We count, restrict, eliminate, start over and decide we failed when somebody else’s formula doesn’t produce the experience we expected.
I want something different for you.
Eat, then listen.
Notice your energy. Notice your digestion. Notice whether you feel satisfied. Notice how rushing, stress, distraction and emotion show up around your meals.
Learning how I digest food also taught me to ask a bigger question.
What else am I asking my body to process?
Stress. Old emotions. Past experiences. Things I haven’t fully released.
Food became another place where I learned to know myself instead of fight myself.
Your body has been giving you information.
