Today in Puerto Rican History
In February 1962, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. visited Puerto Rico, at the height of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. Invited by the Fellowship of Reconciliation and the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico, King spent approximately two days on the island, engaging deeply with students, faculty, and the broader community. His visit was not symbolic or brief — it was intentional, thoughtful, and rooted in dialogue.
During his stay, Dr. King delivered major speeches at Inter-American University in San Germán and later at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras. His talks focused on nonviolence, the collapse of old systems built on segregation and inequality, and the moral responsibility of societies to choose justice over fear. He spoke about human dignity as universal, linking the struggle of African Americans in the United States with the lived realities of Puerto Rico and other oppressed peoples around the world.
King’s presence on the island reinforced a powerful idea: Puerto Rico was not outside history — it was part of a global conversation about rights, dignity, and the future of humanity. His message echoed long after he left, reminding us that solidarity crosses oceans and that the pursuit of justice is shared. 🇵🇷
