The George Washington University Preconception Peer Educators - GWPPE

The George Washington University Preconception Peer Educators - GWPPE GWPPE exists to educate GW students and the DC community about lifestyle choices prior to conception that help ensure safe and healthy birth outcomes.

The Preconception Peer Educators Program was launched by the Office of Minority Health (OMH) of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in August 2008 as part of its infant mortality awareness campaign, A Healthy Baby Begins with You, which began in May of 2007. The campaign was designed to raise awareness of infant mortality in the United States with an emphasis on the large and dispar

ate rates among African Americans. It is one of many efforts of the OMH developed to end health disparities among racial and ethnic minorities. The Preconception Peer Educators Program was designed to extend and continue the infant mortality awareness message of the A Healthy Baby Begins with You campaign while adding information on preconception health. College students will be trained as health ambassadors and will convey targeted health messages to youth emphasizing preconception health and healthcare.
