This week in we read and analyzed a poem by . The students could really relate and connect to this poem on many levels. I love how their one pagers turned out. So many skills were included in this lesson such as theme, figurative language, and symbolism. Very proud of their hard work. Thank you to my amazing new teacher friend and colleague for sharing this poetry idea In case you are wondering, yes we listened to some of his greatest hits after the lesson (clean version of course). 😉🌹

We start our ELA Class each day with SURF- Silent Uninterrupted Reading Fun! This is a nonnegotiable for us. My sixth graders know what to expect as soon as they walk into our room each day. Students choose their own books to read toward our 40 Book Challenge and everyone has pledged to read every day. They know I value this time and so do they! I have been completely MIA on the and for very good reason. Right before I was supposed to start teaching second grade, I got hired as a sixth grade ELA teacher in a local district closer to my home!!! 🥳🙌 ⁣

I have been looking for a job closer to home since moving back to PA in 2012. It has been a complete whirlwind and things are slowly starting to fall into place. I started teaching my middles a week after school started in a basically empty classroom for the first time in 22 years! Anyone who knows me knows I love to decorate and set up my classroom, so this was tough. ⁣

There are so many new systems to learn as well as a new reading series, but I am trying to take it one day at a time. Baby steps! 😂 I am beyond thankful for my new school, AMAZING sixth grade ELA team to work with, short drive to work, and most of all to my God who worked all of this out after many years of being patient and praying. 🙏🏻💙💛

After finding out my sixth grade ELA position was unexpectedly eliminated at my school, the same day my hubby surprised me with a trip to my happy place! We haven’t been back to the place we called home for ten years since we left in 2012. The week was spent with our maid of honor and best man camping on the bay all weekend, soaking up the sun, and reconnecting with old friends and coworkers who we haven’t seen in nearly ten years! It was the perfect pick-me-up! I am so grateful that I was able to get my toes in that sugar white sand before all of the back to school chaos starts. Thank you ❤️

After spending the last year teaching sixth grade ELA, I am moving back to second grade due to low numbers in sixth. I taught second grade in FL for years and absolutely loved it. I’m looking forward to a brand new adventure with an AMAZING team. 💙💛

Lazy summer days are for lounging by the pool and reading awesome PD books like this one. My focus for next year will be improving grammar instruction with Mentor Sentences. My plan is to tie them to my novels. I have never been a fan of teaching grammar in isolation 😝- it simply does not work. Have you read this book? Do you use Mentor Sentences in your ELA classroom? Would love to hear from you!

It was a fabulous trip up to Happy Valley Penn State University to watch our Lady Pioneers play in the PIAA Single A Softball state championship game for the fourth time. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the outcome that we hoped for, but our Lady Pioneers were certainly the more talented team. So thankful for amazing co-workers to share special times like this with! Thanks .berry.986! Had a blast!! 🌟🙌🥎💙💛
