We invite you to our 59th Annual Hurst Lecture! This year, Dr. Jacqueline Scott will be presenting on "’A Dream Deferred’: African American Meta-Oppression, Nietzsche, and the Path Towards a Pessimistic Health."
The abstract is below:

Dr. Scott will diagnose a consistent and growing problem among African Americans. She argues that sustained systemic racialized oppression has led to a condition called Meta-Oppression and it has led to despair and resignation among many of us. She further argues that using arguments made by Friedrich Nietzsche this Meta-Oppression can also lead to a type of health for both African Americans and the larger society.

The Philosophy and Religion Department is inviting you to our 11th Annual Durfee Lecture! This year we have the pleasure of welcoming Jane McAuliffe; please see the abstract below for more details on her lecture. We hope to see you there!

Abstract: "Despite the pervasive misperception that the Qur’an arrived only recently on American shores, it actually has a history in this country that predates the formation of the Republic. It lived in the minds and hearts of enslaved west Africans for generations; it had a place on the library shelves of some of our Founding Fathers; it fascinated literary figures in the nineteenth century and beyond; and it continues to be a source of new interpretation and expression in this American century."
