Medomak Fiberarts Retreat

We’re thrilled to welcome Rosalba back to camp this summer, this time as a teacher!
Rosalba brings a deep love for the earth, respect for materials, and a focus on regenerative practices to Medomak.

They’ll be teaching folks how to make prints on fabric using the sun, weave small tapestries in tree branches, coax a rainbow of color using natural dyes, and how to weave on a backstrap loom.

We still have a few spots open in each of our retreat weeks. Come join us this summer and nurture your own creative practice!

Rosalba Breazeale (they/them, b. 1989) is an artist, educator and studio director at 205 Ocean Ave studios based on the traditional lands of the Wabanaki Confederacy, so-called Portland, ME. They hold an MFA from the University of New Mexico and BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Their multidisciplinary art practice encompasses analog, digital and alternative process photography, soft fiber sculpture and installation with an emphasis on regenerative practice. Breazeale’s identity as a Q***r, Jewish, transnational adoptee from Peru forms the foundation from which they create work addressing connection to land, diasporic experience, European colonization and related environmental issues.

Wrapping up week 1 and getting ready for Week 2 of our Fiberarts Retreat. Excited to welcome Danielle Arroyo, as our Indigo Arts Alliance Fiberarts Fellow. Danielle will be taking classes and making new work while in residence.

Danielle is a multidisciplinary artist residing in Portland Maine. Her practice is guided by the seasons, and involves working with the natural world, specifically with florals and fungi. A florist by trade, Danielle is a forager at heart. In late summer and autumn, she collects local wild mushrooms to create delicate spore prints, which she later frames. The rest of the year she is creating floral installations, working in horticultural education, and soaking up as much sun as possible. her work is informed by her experience as a q***r, mixed race, woman living with the grief of losing her mother at a young age to addiction and breast cancer. Last year, Danielle tested positive for having BRCA1, and has been drawn to investigating the relationship between genetic mutations, generational trauma, and breaking curses.

The Indigo Arts Alliance is an Artist Residency & Incubator in Portland, ME committed to the artistic development of Black and Brown Artists. IAA’s mission is to cultivate the artistic development of people of African descent in connection with other artists from diverse backgrounds of the African Diaspora. Addressing the underrepresentation of Black and Brown artists in Maine and world-wide the IAA residency provides space for dialogue and exchange between artists of African descent and other communities of color. To date, Indigo Arts Alliance has served 35 artists in residence. Artists came from the following cultural heritages including some of the following countries: African American/US, Belize, Peru, Brazil, Sierra Leone, Trinidad, Jamaica, Mexico, India, Ethiopia, Sudan, Bermuda, Gabon, and Ghana. Just a few more days till we welcome to camp! Veronica will be in residence with us as the Fellow for Week 1 of our Fiberarts Retreat this year! They will be taking classes and making new work while in residence.

Veronica is an artist whose work is deeply rooted in the community. Through their braiding circle workshops, they explore themes of erasure, identity, and interdependency. In 2020, they were awarded the Ellis-Beaureguard Visual Arts Fellowship, followed by the inaugural fellowship at the David C. Driskell Black Seed Studio at Indigo Arts Alliance in 2021. In 2022, they were a fellow at the Lunder Institute at Colby College, and subsequently had their first solo exhibition titled voices, whispering at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art. In 2023, Perez was awarded the St. Botolph Club Foundation Emerging Artist award and the Amelia Peabody award for sculpture excellence. In the summer of 2023, they had their second solo show at the University of Southern Maine Art Gallery in Gorham, shadow / echo / memory. Recently, the named her one of the Maine Artist Fellows for 2024 in fine arts. Currently, Perez works as the Administrative Assistant at the Black-led arts and residency organization Indigo Arts Alliance in Portland, Maine. They are also on the Center Board of Directors and the Policy Committee for the .

We’re busy finalizing details for our summer retreats, which start on July 22nd and July 29th, and thrilled to announce this year’s recipients of the Indigo Arts Alliance Fiberarts Fellowships.

We’re excited to welcome and to camp this year as our 2024 Fellows!

The fellowship, now in its third year, was created in partnership with to offer an artist the time and space to explore their creative work at the Medomak Fiberarts Retreat. In 2022 and 2023, the fellowships were awarded to and , respectively. With the growth of our retreat to two weeks, we are now able to offer an additional Fellowship. Veronica will be in residence the first week, and Danielle the second, each taking workshops and spending time deepening their practices. Read about each artist in forthcoming posts, and more about below.

Want to spend a day taking a deep dive into the magical world of natural dyes and all the gorgeous colors that come from working with plants?
Then, allow me introduce our next fiber artist in our Featured Teacher series: our beloved color maven !

Rachel is teaching some of her most popular workshops this year, including spinning, Aran knitting, scrappy yarn bears, and color play (described below)

COLOR PLAY
Rachel Bingham-Kessler | 6 hrs
Spend a full day on just playing with color. Using prepped fibers, we’ll explore prepared natural pigment powders, freshly foraged plants and various eco printing techniques. Come away with your own color catalog of sample yarns and fabrics plus several eco printed tests of your work from the day. We’ll take the time at the end of class to insert all our samples into our booklets with labels. This will be a hands-on class where we will be checking dye pots often, sorting fresh plants, and covering a lot of ground with as many colors as we have time for.
No previous dyeing experience needed. Materials kit will include a prepared fibers pack & handmade booklet.

Rachel Bingham Kessler is an autistic fiber artist and painter living on Peaks Island, Maine. Working with foraged pigments, vintage textiles, landscape and botanical painting is at the core of her studio practice. Her class development through an autistic lens and Irish travel is how she enjoys sharing her skills and passions with others. Rachel created 44Clovers, a small batch yarn line focusing on Maine and Irish grown wool and natural dyes in 2012. Since then she has been researching and practicing lichen dyeing, stewarding vintage textiles into fresh pieces, and curating Irish Knitting Tours & Retreats.

LET’S GET LOOPY: I’M TALKING POTHOLDERS!!!

It’s fun for the whole family, and by family I mean the Medomak fam! Potholder loom frames have been around for a while! Maybe you have vague memories of stretching cotton loops across a metal frame and weaving them over, under, over, under. This meditative activity ticks all the boxes: Colors! Textures! Boingy fabric! Not too think-y! And in the end, you’ll have a functional potholder or two.
