This past week in Library, we celebrated Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. There were two books that we focused our attention on: 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘓𝘰𝘭𝘢 𝘝𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘴 by Michelle Sterling and 𝘔𝘺 𝘓𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘺 𝘋𝘢𝘺 by Keiko Kasza (my favorite book growing up!). We enjoyed stations of: Pikachu/Eevee or Stitch/Angel origami folding, paper lantern creations, coloring, reading, and dancing. (Sorry for the limited pictures due to all the crafting.)

Our 2nd Grade classes have been working on writing original songs. We combined songwriting with digital literacy and citizenship. AI engines such as Suno, ChatGPT, Lyric.io and other online tools were discussed along with internet safety. The video attached is a video containing all 5 songs students created.

This past week in Library, our theme was Space! In our book, 𝘙𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘵 𝘚𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘓𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘜𝘱! by Nathan Bryon, we were challenged to do more looking up (at the sky, stars, clouds, birds, trees, etc.) than looking down (at our devices). Some classes even got a chance to watch videos on the latest Artemis II mission. Our stations included: craft your own rocket/planet, constellation station, reading, drawing, or space chase.

Hey, this is Mr. Luke! Just wanted to share some big news that happened recently: The Stewart Elementary library was selected to receive an Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation (IALF) Teacher Supplement Grant this year. With that money, we were able to expand our agricultural section of the library from two books to about twenty-five!

This past week, I had the chance to show the kids the new books (some checked them out!) and share about how agriculture impacts our lives. We talked about the importance of knowing where our food comes from, using pizza ingredients as an example to think about. We also talked about the processes and people that get the food to our plates. You've got some knowledgeable children!

We engaged with some interactive stations during activity time: seed matching game, fruit/vegetable observation, tear paper food, magazine food collage, drawing, and reading.

Happy Earth Month! Recently in Library, we read 𝘈 𝘞𝘢𝘺 𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 by Larissa Theule, in which our main character, Poppy, reminds us of the importance of observation and solitude. Poppy loves all kinds of little creatures, so our main station was Create Your Own Bug (or Wildflower)! Other stations included: reading about insects, coloring pages, doing mazes/word finds, or watching a show.
