On a hot night like tonight, the crickets are running fast β€” and they're doing math for you. A cricket's chirp is driven by muscle chemistry that speeds up and slows down with the air temperature, so precisely that in 1897 a physicist named Amos Dolbear published a formula for it, and "the cricket as a thermometer" has been in farmers' almanacs ever since. The backyard version couldn't be simpler: count one cricket's chirps for fourteen seconds, add forty, and you've got the temperature in Fahrenheit, usually within a degree or two. The snowy tree cricket β€” the soft, steady chirper in the hedges β€” is the most accurate of the lot; the field crickets run a little hot and loose. Step out before bed, pick out one steady voice, and check it against the porch thermometer. On a night this warm, you won't be counting slowly. Going to try it tonight?
