Photos show our summer wrap up lesson with the kiddos at Rainbow’s End in Washington. They were a great group! Prevention Specialists Dallan Cline and Ramona Cholak Jenks reviewed the health and safety topics we had addressed over the last 8 weeks with the group. The children then created colorful posters related to the topics.

Once Upon a Time Early Learning Center allowed prevention specialists Jeff McCollough and Ramona Cholak Jenks to work with the children at their site over the summer. This was the first time WDAC provided services to them. We worked with about 30 kiddos each week. Thanks to their staff for always being their to lend a hand as we tackled many activities. Among them: teamwork skills, developing good friendship qualities, keeping lungs healthy, relaxation techniques, and healthy drinks. In this wrap up lesson, the theme was how all the lessons helped them learn how to be safe and healthy.

In this, our last week of summer camps, we reviewed the many things we talked about with the children over the past 7 weeks. Then, each child was given artwork materials to create a poster with the theme, “We learned about staying safe and healthy!” These colorful offerings were created by children at Cameron Wellness Center summer camp.

Substance Use: Promoting Accurate SOCIAL NORMS
It’s a fact in the U.S. that both children and adults overestimate the number of teens who use drugs. This misperception is problematic! Nationwide research reveals that most do not! By nature, children have a strong desire to fit in with the other kids. When they believe that most others are involved with drugs it can be a motivator to join in that. We work to dispel this myth in our programs. In our summer camp lessons we had children assemble 4’ X 5’ puzzles stating, “MOST kids do NOT use drugs! Be a part of that group!” Shown are kiddos at SmartKids in Meadowlands displaying their assembled puzzles.

We had a great time mini golfing at Interstate Golf and Activity Center the early rain didn’t deter folks from coming out for mini golf and a good time! They enjoyed a game of mini golf and an ice cream treat afterwards.

Medicine Safety was our topic this week at summer camps/child learning centers. We talked with children about differences between prescription and over the counter (OTC) drugs; identified examples of both and talked about risks and side effects. We described the expertise of doctors and what they need to know about patients before prescribing medicines and the importance of following doctor’s instructions on the label. We explained the reasons prescription medicines should not be shared and much more. Several methods were employed to make the lesson fun and interactive including a bingo game and a matching memory challenge. We utilized a comic book designed to address safe disposal of medicines using a Deterra Drug Deactivation System pouch (pictured). Each child was given their comic book and a Deterra pouch to take home for parental use. Deterra pouches deactivate medicines and are available free of charge by request at WDAC.
