From August 6-9, 29 FLEX and YES Alumni Coordinators (ACs) gathered in Belgrade, Serbia, to attend the annual American Councils Alumni Coordinator Training Conference! For four days, 16 new and 13 returning ACs learned how to engage alumni around the world, initiate change in their communities, and more. We look forward to seeing all the ACs, along with their teams of City and University Representatives, accomplish throughout the year. Go ACACs! 🌐🎉

On August 5, we – an opportunity for international exchange participants and host communities to come together to share cultural diversity and give back to their communities. Join us in raising awareness of international exchange programs and spreading the word about the positive impact and breadth of international exchanges!

In 2022, Khusrav bid farewell to his host family, unaware that fate would bring them together again in 2024. His host family's surprise trip to Tajikistan coincided with the return of the new generation of '24 FLEX alumni, so they were also warmly welcomed by the FLEX family. During their travels, Khusrav and his host dad even attended FLEX PDO, where his dad, now a cluster coordinator for one of the placement organizations, shared words of advice and wisdom with new finalists.

On July 10, the newest cohort of FLEX alumni in Uzbekistan gathered for their re-entry seminar! The seminar provided a valuable platform for alumni to reflect on their unforgettable exchange year experiences while also supporting each other during their readjustment period

The seminar featured mentoring sessions led by senior alumni, along with community service activities that fostered collaboration and engagement. Additionally, an insightful panel showcased six alumni from different generations who shared how their FLEX experiences have shaped their current studies and career paths.

Arystan Moldabekov, an alumnus of the FLEX program and the U.S.-Central Asia Education Foundation’s Enterprise Student Fellowship Program, was recently recognized as part of American Councils’ 50 Alumni for 50 Years initiative. Honored as the Best Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Year by the Kazakhstan Growth Forum, Mr. Moldabekov has served as the CFO of Citibank Kazakhstan since 2022, and his achievements were celebrated at the CFO Summit 2024, a gathering of Kazakhstan’s leading financiers and economists. We are proud to count individuals among our alumni like Mr. Moldabekov, who use their international education to advance the business landscape in their home countries. From June 30 to July 2, 58 FLEX alumni from Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia gathered at Sangaste Castle, Estonia, for the FLEX Baltic’s 30th Anniversary celebration! 🎉 This multi-day event included multiple professional development sessions led by alumni, a session on Alumni Opportunities led by American Councils staff, along with a visit from the U.S. Embassy in Tallinn, a workshop on storytelling and video-making, and a disco party. 🕺 Here’s to 30 years of the FLEX Program! 💙✨

The year 2024 marked 30 years of the very first alumni group returning to Ukraine from the FLEX Program. To celebrate this occasion, American Councils Ukraine organized the reception for alumni on June 16.

The alumni reception started with welcoming words from Arthur Evans, Public Affairs Officer at U.S. Embassy Kyiv. In his speech Arthur Evans presented the magnitude of the Program’s achievements during the past 30 years and shared about alumni success stories. Participants also paid a silent tribute to Volodymyr Ivashchenko '04, who sacrificed his life to serve Ukraine.

Then, Oksana Kovalenko, Language Policy Division Directorate for School Education at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, highlighted the importance of the Program and underlined the long-standing cooperation of American Councils, U.S. Embassy Kyiv and the Ministry. Yarema Bachynsky, American Councils Country Director, also congratulated the participants on the 30th Program Anniversary and called alumni to stay connected.

Afterwards, a “Living Library” activity was organized to encourage networking and sharing experience among alumni and invited partners from America House, Peace Corps, IREX. Twelve alumni speakers from 2003-2023 Program years discussed their experience in leading charitable funds, organizing projects in their local communities, supporting Ukraine during war, working at international organizations, leading a business, taking part in the international youth programs, and more. Alumni had three rounds to rotate and talk to different speakers and participants.

Finally, the participants enjoyed free time networking, taking pictures, exploring the suggested zones: yearbook, postcards to host family, presents, and having dinner. In total 113 people took part in the reception, including alumni from 1994-2023 program years.

In honor of the 30th anniversary of the FLEX Program, Shafiga Chiragi '24 (Azerbaijan) shares her best FLEXperience: “One of my biggest dreams since childhood was to do some kind of sport. During my exchange year, I became a member of the school's tennis team, made lifelong friends, and created unforgettable memories. On July 7, the Dashoguz American Corner (DAC) in Turkmenistan organized a welcome party for alumni who recently returned after completing their exchange year in the United States as part of the FLEX program. The event aimed to strengthen ties within the Dashoguz FLEX community, facilitate the sharing of experiences among alumni, and demonstrate appreciation for the USG programs. During the event, 5 alumni and 4 FLEX finalists engaged in discussions over lunch, participated in speaking and acting activities, and shared success stories, experiences, and expectations!

Samir Hajiyev is currently serving as the Strategic Content Coordination Specialist for the U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan. In 1999, Mr. Hajiyev embarked on his FLEX journey in Ukiah, California, an experience that forever changed his personal and professional trajectory. It was during this exchange year in the United States that Mr. Hajiyev discovered his interest in computer science and web design through a course offered at his host high school. This newfound passion led him to pursue further education in technology, leading to his involvement in pioneering online ventures, including the inception of Azerbaijan’s first online shop. In 2012, Mr. Hajiyev merged his passion for technology and international relations by joining the Public Diplomacy Team at the U.S. Embassy in Baku.

Mr. Hajiyev continues to celebrate the impact of the FLEX program, recognizing the integral role exchange programs play in building stronger ties between nations. “It helps students to see the world, culture, and diplomacy, at different angles,” shared Mr. Hajiyev. “Through educational and
cultural exchanges, we can build a better and brighter world based on mutual respect and understanding.”

Recently, Serbia hosted its Re-entry Seminar for FLEX '24 students at Silver Lake! The three-day seminar was hosted thanks to the support from the U.S. Embassy in Serbia, where 30 new alumni looked back at their FLEX experience and were welcomed to the alumni community by alumni mentors!

Recently, 40 participants, including newly returned alumni, celebrated the Fourth of July in Almaty, Kazakhstan! From fun games to delicious pizza, it was a day of joy and connection. "The celebration of the 4th of July has truly become a cherished tradition in our alumni community," says Alumni Coordinator Nargyz Bitimbay '20. Here’s to many more years of making memories together! 🥳✨

This year, to honor the 30th anniversary of the FLEX Program, FLEX alumni – along with recent FLEX participants (’24) and past and present members from host communities – were invited to submit photos and videos that highlight their experiences as part of the FLEX program according to four categories: Unforgettable Memories, Exchanging Cultures, Friendship & Community, and Leading & Learning.

A team of judges from the U.S Department of State Bureau and Educational and Cultural Affairs reviewed the submissions and chose four winners for each category, first (gold), second (silver), third (bronze), and fourth place (green). Happy 4th of July from the FLEX Alumni Program!

In June, we recognized and celebrated the resilience and courage of the LGBTQ+ community. June served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and the significant strides that have been made.

In recognition, we highlight Armand Volentiru '22 who has become a passionate advocate and activist for LGBTQ+ rights in Romania. He shares, “I'd like to call everyone to remember all the people who have been lost to the fight for equality, every q***r person who was not able to see the progress that has been made. I am thankful to be able to be proud of who I am. I strive for a better future for all the next generations, and for us today. The fight hasn’t stopped!"

Reflecting on an inspiring day at the recent FLEX talks at the American Corner Namangan! 🌟 On June 14, Namangan City Representative Durdona Joraxonova '23 (Uzbekistan) organized a FLEX Talks that brought together a total of 55 participants, where alumni from different generations shared their unique FLEX experiences and answered questions. This event was a great opportunity to welcome the alumni of 2024 who just returned from their exchange year!

An exemplary alumna from , Anisa Atalova '12 had an exceptional international education journey. At the age of sixteen, she participated in the FLEX Program. Anisa expressed her gratitude for the significant impact of the , crediting the program with providing her with valuable cultural experiences, diverse perspectives, and lasting friendships.

Continuing her educational pursuits, Anisa attended the American University of Central Asia through the US-Central Asia Education Foundation (U.S.-CAEF), which provided her with the opportunity to intern in Washington, DC. Anisa’s ongoing engagement with U.S.-CAEF is underscored by her role as a founding member of the U.S.-CAEF Alumni Association.

Today, Anisa is the CEO of Uniqum Sport, the first inclusive sports complex in Kyrgyzstan. Anisa attributes much of her growth and leadership development to the support and guidance she received from the dedicated staff of American Councils, particularly highlighting the impact of Ms. Rosa Thiele, Manager of Higher Education Programs at American Councils. In Anisa’s own words, “I know these programs have created an extremely strong foundation for my personal development, opened many opportunities and doors for me, and still are helping to realize all of the potential that was in me.”

The new generation of '24 FLEX alumni from Turkmenistan recently returned home! On June 12, 15 new FLEX alumni accompanied by Yelena Gareyeva '08, FLEX Alumni Coordinator in Turkmenistan, successfully returned to their home country, where past participants turned into new FLEX alumni full of ideas and passion to pass on their unforgettable experiences!

Recently, 40 new alumni from Moldova returned from their exchange year in the U.S. and were welcomed by older alumni at the airport! From making memories and learning invaluable lessons, to growing more independent and discovering new passions, the '24 generation did it all. As FLEX alumni, they can now use those experiences to engage their community and make the world a better place! Welcome, alumni!

Kairat Berdishaliev '19 (Kyrgyzstan) recently participated in the Alumni Internship Program 2024 Spring cohort and interned with the PILnet Foundation, an international NGO that partners with legal professionals and civil society organizations globally to protect civic space, address global challenges, and work to build just, equitable, and sustainable societies. Pictured here is Kairat at the PILnet Foundation's office in New York City. Kairat shares: "After two months of working remotely from Kyrgyzstan, I spent the last week of the internship fully immersing myself in the dynamic environment of PILnet's headquarters. This hybrid internship was an incredible opportunity for me to learn and grow, allowing me to contribute to impactful projects alongside passionate professionals dedicated to advancing public interest law. Grateful for this unforgettable experience and the invaluable mentorship from the PILnet team!"

The FLEX Alumni Travel and Professional Development Grants Program offers FLEX and FLEX Abroad alumni grants of up to $250 to support their participation in professional development opportunities, such as conferences and workshops.
