“Clean up your toys” felt clear to me.

It wasn’t clear to them.

So I changed the language:
put it back exactly where it belongs.

That shift didn’t just fix the mess;
it built responsibility.

Because kids can’t practice what they don’t understand.

They made their own breakfast this morning, and I loved seeing that independence.

What I didn’t love was the mess they left behind.

And while it would’ve been faster for me to just clean it up myself, I knew this was one of those small moments that mattered more than it looked.

So I paused, called them back, and had them clean it up.

Because independence is important;
but responsibility has to grow with it.

This is how we build ownership at home.
