We had a wonderful staff retreat this week. We discussed our plans for continuing to provide topnotch support for our community and, maybe even more importantly, we reconnected one-on-one and as a group.

Wednesday, guest speaker, Brandon Hawkins ( ), an artist and activist, taught us how to draw. Taking most of us out of our comfort zone, we got a taste of what it might be like for our customers who are having to learn new technologies. Several of us got insights into how our approach to art paralleled our approach to our day-to-day work, and how we each tackle the work in different ways. Organized by , this event also supports the work of .

Thursday, we took a field trip to the nearby (how lucky to be in Washington, DC with access to such treasures!) Our very own Jared Evans, who is also a volunteer docent at the NPG, gave a wonderful tour of a few key pieces with a deaf and technology connection. If you haven’t been yet, go!!

Join us in celebrating three of our valued employees on their longevity and their dedication to GTS and the Gallaudet/Clerc Center community. Shirley Hack-McCafferty, 25 years; Bernadine Bertrand, 20 years; and Daryl Frelich, 30 years. The images are the presentation slides from our August 3 staff meeting with an inset of a Zoom screen capture of the recognition of their service anniversary. Each of them is pictured with GTS Executive Director Earl Parks.

Thank you for a great GTS retreat

GTS staff enjoyed our first in-person gathering since the start of the pandemic during a four-day retreat the week of June 13. During the retreat, we acknowledged the simultaneous joy and ease of being back in person and the awkwardness and trepidation as we got reacquainted, personally and professionally.

Attendees included GTS staff who have been present on campus almost daily for the last few years and staff who have been mostly working from home. Some were remote workers pre-pandemic and some who became fully remote since. All of us who have been managing these changes while supporting our students, teachers, faculty, staff, and administrators who are also learning to manage this “new normal.” We were visited by several of our recent retirees for a proper send-off and we welcomed new staff who joined us during the pandemic—one who even started that week!

We had numerous discussions and activities about the transformation work we are engaged in and about what is next on the horizon. We explored ways to strengthen and improve our internal communication methods and strategies.

We were joined by our Earnest & Young partners to continue our work on our Business Relationship Management (BRM) planning and implementation processes to help us work more effectively with you, our constituents.

We were also joined by our diversity facilitator, Eloise Molock, a recently retired and long-time Gallaudet employee, to continue our ongoing commitment to fostering and maintaining a more equitable and inclusive GTS. We have been working with Eloise since the fall of 2020 on understanding where we are on these issues, the next steps forward, and defining what equity and inclusion look like for us and how we will know if we are achieving our goals.

One thing we discovered is that with everything that has changed, for better or worse, GTS is still a family and perhaps even closer than ever.

So why are we thanking you? We thank you for your patience during the retreat to allow us the uninterrupted time to reconnect. We thank you for your flexibility and understanding as we responded and adjusted to providing technical support in a pandemic environment and as we evolve into whatever this post-pandemic world looks like.
