We are deeply saddened by the passing of Tony Villiotti, a dedicated advocate, leader, and friend whose commitment to improving the lives of people affected by liver disease touched countless individuals around the world.
From the early days of Global Liver Institute’s journey, Tony was a valued and trusted partner. Through his vision, compassion, and tireless work with Liver Education Advocates (LEA), Tony helped build a stronger, more connected community for patients and families navigating liver disease.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Betsy Villiotti, Gina Madison, and the entire LEA family, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.
Tony’s legacy will live on through the many lives he touched, the community he helped build, and the enduring commitment to patient advocacy that he championed so passionately.
Rest in peace, Tony. 🙏🏻

What a week at EASL Congress 2026 in 🇪🇸
GLI’s Joel Ballew, Giacomo Donnini, and Ivy Ahmed engaged with stakeholders from across the liver health landscape, sharing GLI’s growing programs and initiatives. From connecting with partners across the to conversations spanning diagnostics, research, policy, access, and , the week was a powerful reminder of what collaboration can accomplish when patient voices remain at the center!

GLI was proud to attend BeeLiver’s “Paws Up for Liver Health!” on May 17, a community-centered event that brought people together through education, connection, and a shared commitment to raising awareness about .
From health screenings and educational resources to pet adoption and community engagement, the event created a welcoming space that highlighted the importance of accessible, local conversations around liver and wellness.

The Southeast Florida Cancer Control Collaborative and the BeeLiver Foundation are partnering with the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center to offer a virtual support group for patients, caregivers, and survivors primarily within the Southeast Florida region.
The support group will be held via Zoom on May 27, from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM and will be facilitated by a licensed social worker who will lead a discussion on mindfulness and meditation, as well as share additional resources to help individuals cope with a liver disease diagnosis.

Danny Johnson, a 49-year-old grandfather from , sought medical care after months of fatigue and yellowing of his eyes and skin. Testing eventually revealed hepatic caused by steatotic (fatty) liver disease, which had progressed to end-stage .
In December 2025, Danny was placed on the waiting list and received a deceased-donor just two days later. At Cleveland Clinic, he became among the first patients to undergo a fully robotic liver , a procedure available only for select patients at a small number of hospitals nationwide.
Danny spent six days in the hospital following surgery and continues recovering at home. He says he is grateful for his care team, the advancements that made the procedure possible, and the donor and donor family who gave him a second chance.
