We are thrilled to announce the launch of the Davila Documentary, a moving and intimate portrayal of an incredible individual’s life, resilience, and hope! Even better, it is in ASL, so you can experience the story’s authenticity up close.

This amazing project is a collaboration with Veru Rodriguez, visiting professor from Spain, and celebrates the remarkable life of Dr. Robert Davila.

At Nuestra Casa, every story matters — and we can not wait to share this one with you. ❤️

Hola, I’m Norma Morán. I’m the associate director of Nuestra Casa. Nuestra Casa means “Our Home” in Spanish. We are also known as the Center for Latine Deaf Studies here at Gallaudet University.

I will explain how Nuestra Casa was established. Around 2010 and 2011, we had a small group of Deaf Latine professional staff and faculty. We met and discussed topics that affected the Deaf Latine community across the U.S. In one discussion, we noticed the number of Deaf Latine students entering the university kept increasing and increasing. We questioned if “we” Gallaudet was ready? We came together for a brainstorming session to develop a proposal. We submitted it to the administration . However, the proposal was put on hold for years and years. Finally, in 2023, the time was right to establish Nuestra Casa.

I had the honor of leading and establishing Nuestra Casa with Leticia Arellano. Together, we visualized our mission, visions, goals, and many more. We designed with ideas from people from all over and blended them with new community ideas together. How Nuestra Casa looks today is all thanks to our community's involvement, commitment, and not giving up in achieving our goals. ✨

Hello, I’m Dr. Carla Garcia-Fernandez. I am the Director of Nuestra Casa. Nuestra Casa, which translates to “Our Home,” is a center for Latine Deaf studies, and I serve as an Associate Faculty member for the Deaf Studies Department here at Gallaudet. I am entering my second year here and I’m really excited to be part of Nuestra Casa.

Our goals focus on three areas: research, mentorship, and offering Latine Deaf Studies courses. We really aim to expand research and Latine Deaf resources since we don’t have enough of them. There are some published articles; however, they do not go far enough in examining their deeper history, language, culture, traditions, and much more. So we must meaningfully amplify.

Now, how do we interact with students? It is through mentorship that we encourage the Latine students to learn and develop a love for research. With the support of students, we can expand resources here.

As for classes, we offer Introduction to Deaf Latine Studies, and we will add new courses over time. It is very exciting! Once we have Latine Deaf courses up and running, there will be a Latine Deaf Studies minor. We have been buried in work and building in different areas.

Welcome / Bienvenido

We are delighted to introduce the new page for Nuestra Casa / Center for Latine Deaf Studies. Nuestra Casa stands for Our Home in Spanish. We aim to promote a sense of Bienvenido (welcoming) for the Latine community at Gallaudet through enriching educational, cultural, and social programs.

Nuestra Casa aspires to be a site to amplify connection among Latine students and the broader community on local, national, and global levels. The center provides a space to discover and celebrate our diverse cultural heritages, histories, languages and traditions. Again, bienvenido!
