Meet Brian Hoover, a Johns Hopkins University lecturer and seabird ecologist who spends weeks each year at sea studying how birds can reveal changes in ocean ecosystems.

As principal scientist at the Farallon Institute, Hoover tracks where seabirds feed, migrate, and nest, combining thousands of bird observations with ocean measurements to understand how biodiversity hotspots shift as conditions change.

His research takes him from the California coast to the Bering Sea and the Aleutian Islands—and sometimes includes a banjo or mandolin between sightings.

For Mariella Alvey, advancing cancer research means understanding the complex biology that shapes each patient’s disease.

As a Senior Research Associate at Providence Cancer Institute, Alvey studies immunotherapy and tumor samples from patients enrolled in clinical trials. Through our MS in Individualized Genomics and Health, she expanded her knowledge of cancer genomics, gene therapy, and epigenetics while continuing to work full-time.

Her Johns Hopkins University education has helped her better understand the science behind her laboratory work—and strengthened her ability to contribute to research that could help move discoveries closer to the patients who need them.

What happens when graduate students take their learning beyond the classroom and into the community?

In Spring 2027, students in our MA in Nonprofit Management program can enroll in a new field study course, Community Engagement: Tools and Techniques for Making Meaningful Connection. Based in Columbia, Maryland, the course will combine classroom learning with immersive consulting experience.

Students will work with local nonprofit organizations to explore community engagement challenges and develop practical recommendations organizations can use—all while gaining hands-on professional experience.

From a childhood act of kindness toward an injured crow to an international career in food science, Kantha Shelke’s journey is anything but ordinary.

A senior lecturer in our MS in Regulatory Science program, Shelke has spent decades working across food science, nutrition, food safety, regulatory science, and product development. At Johns Hopkins University, she teaches future food safety leaders while helping students understand not just regulations, but how to think critically about the food we eat.

Her work reflects a simple belief: food should be safe, nutritious, and good for people and the planet.
